I have no experience with Melody Major banjos, but a little investigation on the web showed them as part of a series made by George Houghton (and Son, so often shown as GH&S). They were in Birmingham, and made banjos from before WWII until 1962, at which time, George Jr. moved to London and combined forces with the Dallas banjo makers.
It sounds like the "Melody" series were their less expensive banjos, and included "Melody Jo", "Melody Junior", and "Melody Major"

I bought a tenor at a market for £35 last month.
it looks quite old, but cheaply made.
i put a new vellum skin on it.
first time ive done that and it seems to sound ok.
i would like some more info about where they came from etc.
