I am always trying to bring together experienced session players with newer players.
It seems everyone gets something from the experience
when it happens naturally..We all have 2 things in common.
~ We all listen to traditional Irish music &
we all participate in activity on the WorldWideWeb.
I am curious how many early members are
still reading the comments on 12 July 2008.
Anyone out there with a 'member #' under say 150
The one thing, that is kind of linked with the original post here, that has struck me from time to time, is how close quite a few of the older posters became, and remain. I joined not too long in, and was reading the board for at least a year or so before that. So I could have got in on the act with the 'old-timers'. But I didn't. And it's surprising how left out one can feel at times ...
Personally, I tend to take to people - or not - depending on how they're posting *now*, so for me - apart from the above 'club' that I failed to join while it was open to me - it doesn't matter what your member number is.
This is interesting. After member no 1, who is Jeremy, you have to go as far as member no 25 before you get anyone who's posted anything on the board at all. Ever.
Again, unless I'm reading the site wrong ... but I don't think I am ...
Then there's interesting gaps where people have been removed (at least, I assume that's what it is) ... like at no 47 for instance ... Wonder who that was ...
Hardly anybody in the first 50 members seems to have posted at all. Less than a handful.
BenHall1 I really did intend to bring together players (members?) who might otherwse tend to go their separate ways.
I had assumed at least a few of the current contributors held 2 or 3 digit member #s. I suppose the 1st thread would on way to see who is still commenting.
I heard you can never leave the .org(anization)
;)
But imagine if even a handful (say five) of every block of 50 members posted once a week. That would amount to 7000 posts per day! And if each of them posted six replies to one question, that would be 30,000 posts. Be careful what you wish for.
Ah, but there's a difference between posting once a week and never posting at all - ever. If you defined a 'member' as someone who had posted anything at all, I'd be interested to see how many 'members' there were. I'm guessing not all that many. But then, I've only looked in the first 50. Maybe nobody got really active until 33668.
This really is supposed to be a discusson about music
For the newbies ~ the downtrodden ~ the ones' in the outer circle sitting with the punters
Perhaps some of those early members don't have a good internet connection. I have received a few emails from the Ivory Coast & not been able to reply.
Here's a thread from 3 years ago featuring (if that's the right word) a member who is, sadly, no longer with us. Made me laugh out loud. I think the gaps make it even funnier.
All you have to do to see a member's number (and get a sense of how long s/he has been here) is move your cursor over their screen name. The member number shows up on the lower frame of your screen.
I'm 58. I don't know of anyone besides Jeremy with a lower number who participates here.
Opps, I forgot about Mary (Antikhntr). But have the others really participated recently?
Let's just say there's damn few of us in the double digits.
I used to check in back when only Jeremy could post tunes (a tune a week), and there were no discussion threads or much of any other features. Several of us lurkers petitioned Jeremy to let others submit tunes, and in response, he threw the site wide open. I still think this is his idea of an elaborate experiment in online human interaction.
Random_notes, I'm not sure that it is not possible to "leave the .org(anization)" - voluntarily presumably, because we know that trolls and others who have joined for commercial purposes have departed permanently as swiftly as they arrived. However, I do know of someone who apparently wished to leave voluntarily and I believe has done so - the membership number has since remained unused and the screen name is no longer around.
Perhaps leaving here is a bit like British MPs who wish to leave Parliament. They're not allowed to resign their seat so an arcane procedure is adopted whereby the MP applies for the post of Steward of the Chiltern Hundreds (or one other similar stewardship the name of which I forget). The point is that the stewardship is technically an office of profit under the Crown and is not allowed to be held by an MP, so the MP has to leave Parliament. Shortly after being appointed Steward (an ancient post with no visible duties) the ex-MP resigns his stewardship, leaving a vacancy for the next MP who wishes to quit.
I shouldn't be surprised if a suitably arcane process has been devised for those few who wish to leave this site voluntarily
" I still think this is his idea of an elaborate experiment in online human interaction."
I would love to see the conclusion 8).
Sometimes posters who have been around a long time get a bit too attached to sites i think, its completely understandable but it can be unhealthy.I think cliques and hierarchy due to post count should be avoided, everyone should be able to stand on their own two feet.I admire anyone who can sit on these sites all day,ok admire might be the wrong word, but i can only talk about it for so long,or read about it and i have had my fill.I pity the poor feckers sat at a desk all day i think that is what half the bickering on here is down to.Oh one final thing my wife reckons we are all a bunch off camp head the balls,i must admit i struggle to argue 8).

BTW, I know of at least one early adopter that actually asked Jeremy to remove him from the database after he got fed up with some of the antics here.
For some people, that's a somewhat dangerous threat, because if you've posted a ton of tunes, I would assume that tunes you've posted will disappear, along with ABC snippets posted in the comments, etc. (so all of you need to be nice to Dow, Will, and everybody else who has been gracious enough to share tune settings with us. )
"if you move your cursor over any emoticon, you'll see the keyboard sequence"
Not necessarily, it depends on your browser. It doesn't do it for me when I use Safari (my browser of choice when I need pure speed) or my two other browsers Firefox and Opera. Perhaps it works on IE, but I wouldn't know - I cast that one into the Outer Darkness a long time ago.
Pete, I think what happens if you leave the site and your screen name and number are erased is that your posted tunes remain, but without any attribution - there is just a blank where the poster's screen name should be. I seem to remember having seen that some time ago. The content of the tune database would therefore remain intact.
Trevor, what Pete is saying is that some people have asked Jeremy to "erase" them, and that includes all their contributions, not just their screen names.
I left a few years ago by (according to my interpretation!) mutual agreement with Jeremy. All my posts were deleted (his decision if I remember rightly), which resulted in some humorous bleeding chunks in some threads. I signed up again a while ago, not clandestinely as that is never my style, and it passed without comment. So you can leave, or you could then anyway!
Will, I'm still not sure about this. As I understand it, the Tunes database is the fundamental part of this website, as Jeremy makes clear on the Home Page. If someone leaves it would therefore make sense to maintain the integrity of the Tunes database by retaining any tunes that person may have contributed, even if all his other postings elsewhere on the site are erased. Otherwise, important tunes could be erased (and lost, if they are rare), to the detriment of the site and the folk music scene.
Trevor, my sense of it is that some people have left in a bit of a huff, and wanted no trace of themselves left behind. I don't know whether they had submitted tunes or not. I don't know Jeremy's spin on all this, but he has obliged a few people by erasing all of their posts. Some discussion threads certainly read strangely because key comments have disappeared, and in other cases, whole threads were erased, including some with redeeming and "rare" content.
In short, it's a web site, not a vault. Things are liable to go poof.
"Things are liable to go poof"
Which is why, for quite some time now, I've been routinely backing up all my posts onto a word processor. I recommend it for anyone who posts regularly.
I still come to the session regularly.
I did lurk for a year or so before joining.
And I play once a week but don't practice
enough. But I like my transcriptions better
than the ones I find on here, which I use
as benchmarks. I don't understand the
"leave in a huff" folks, after all as Will
says, even our friends are four hours
away.
Maybe "leave in a huff" isn't the right phrase. A few people have left in shock at the occasional appalling behavior here, and they no longer wanted to be associated with it at all.
Funny, but we had a fight alongside our local session last Thursday. It was ugly and sad and the publican ended up with a bad bump on her head. The police hauled the instigator off to jail. Nasty business all around. It reminded me that online boards aren't the only places people sometimes go off the deep end.
Much like life, there are random eejits with appalling behavior on the internet. However, I still leave the house, and I still go on the internet. Remember, when the appalling eejits prevent you from living your life the way you want, the appalling eejits win!
...or something like that, I don't know, it's early, I'm still drinking coffee.
Thanks ~ good discussion.

Its true that some of the older members on the board formed a special bond....I dont think there was any snobbishness involved though. Its just that we all became friends..
I travelled from Ireland to america with on Conan McDonnell, stayed with Helen Roche numerous times in London, travelled from Baltimore to NY state with Emily Az and Zina and then took in NY with Zina, Jason M, also met up with Zina last time I was in london and all that. And now Zina is coming to australia and staying with me for a month...which I'm really looking forward too. The thing was we all started posting on this site but then became real friends. Its amazing considering I prob would never had met these people (especially the ones from the US) had I never ventured onto thesession.org.
I have met Zina on several occasions, once for a memorable session in Winter Park, Colorado when I was over there skiing and another time for a great session at the Herschel.
I know Helen Roche well and Conan and Ottery. I have also played in sessions in London with Danny and Orson Carte.
Dow has stayed at my place a couple of times when he's been laying low from the Australian police and all this as a result of this forum (thanks Jeremy).
I don't post as much as I used to as, to be honest, it all seems a bit like deja vu with the discusssions but occasionally I feel like chipping in. I do miss a lot of the old names though.

Thats me as well. Not this forum as i never posted here until recently but another forum and reading the net in general.I think its healthy to have an ever moving forum with comings and goings.like real life i suppose.
I'm fairly new here (member # 45265), although I admit to lurking around for some time now and posting when I feel like I have something worthwhile to contribute (which is not very often since I am an ITM newbie). Most of the discussions I find very helpful (once I weed out the bantering and the bickering and after awhile, it is easy to figure out who knows what they are talking about and who is full of themselves.
And Random_notes: not all of us young and inexperienced players are cocky. I am the first to admit that I haven't got a clue as to what I am doing and welcome any advice and constructive criticism that the more experienced players have to offer.
.....So thanks to all you seasoned sessioners who regularly post here. I'm learning lots!
Zina Lee said something about, ~"you're not good enough to be modest." Either way I welcome you here Jennamafer. Newbies are rarely as cocky as others make them out. We are who we are.
Can't say how long I've been a member actually. For some years I forgot that I was. When I tried to join a couple of years ago I got the message that I was already a member.
Perhaps this makes me an elder statesman! However, if any of you do want someone to help settle some of the more arcane, tricky or even ridiculous disputes that crop up - don't call me, I'll be out at a session!
Greetings Rob. We may have briefly met on 17 July. You asked a question, I commented & by the next day there was not 1 shred of evidence of the brief encounter.

Its true that some of the older members on the board formed a special bond....I dont think there was any snobbishness involved though. Its just that we all became friends.." "
Now that's cool i think and how it should be.
......
I don't post as much as I used to as, to be honest, it all seems a bit like deja vu with the discusssions but occasionally I feel like chipping in." "
Thats me as well. Not this forum as i never posted here until recently but another forum and reading the net in general.I think its healthy to have an ever moving forum with comings and goings.like real life i suppose.

Re: How long on TheSession?
Can't remember is I'm #53 or #56 but somewhere around there.
My computer here at work doesn't show that info when I mouse over my name.

Re: How long on TheSession?
I'm fairly new here (member # 45265), although I admit to lurking around for some time now and posting when I feel like I have something worthwhile to contribute (which is not very often since I am an ITM newbie). Most of the discussions I find very helpful (once I weed out the bantering and the bickering
and after awhile, it is easy to figure out who knows what they are talking about and who is full of themselves.

Re: How long on TheSession?
Can't say how long I've been a member actually. For some years I forgot that I was. When I tried to join a couple of years ago I got the message that I was already a member.
Perhaps this makes me an elder statesman! However, if any of you do want someone to help settle some of the more arcane, tricky or even ridiculous disputes that crop up - don't call me, I'll be out at a session!

Re: How long on TheSession?
Greetings Rob. We may have briefly met on 17 July. You asked a question, I commented & by the next day there was not 1 shred of evidence of the brief encounter.
I agree playing is better than chatting,
