Anyone Going to the Leinster Fleadh?

Anyone Going to the Leinster Fleadh?

Just had a look at the Fleadh page over on http://comhaltas.ie/events/detail/leinster_fleadh_2008/ and see that the weekend events start tonight. Unfortunately I won't be able to get there myself but would love to get some feedback from anyone who does. I'd be particularly interested in the senior céilí band results as I have a few friends in the Gleann na Coille band.

Also did anyone get to the concerts earlier in the week? There were some very interesting acts ranging from Seán Ó Sé (the Pockar) and Martin Donohoe, Andy Irvine, Slide not to mention FBI man (Foreign Born Irish), the one and only Bruce Scott!

Re: Anyone Going to the Leinster Fleadh?

I was along at some of the concerts. Martin Donohoe and Seán O Sé were in great form - a very informal concert with great comments back and forth to the audience. Andy Irvine gave a good performance, including some favourites going back to his time in Sweeney's Men and Planxty, as well as more recent songs.
I missed Slide but believe it was a wild evening. There were good sessions in the local hostelries all week.
Naithi musicians and Ceoltóirí Óga Laighean played at the official opening last night - a very enjoyable mix of music song and dance, and great entertainment.

I will try to post the senior Céilí Band results, but of course my loyalties lie with Naithí !!

Been there today. Organisation a bit hit and miss. Set dancing venue was awful - a classroom in a school! In general - need more signs for venues, car parks, food etc, Hoping for better tomorrow for seniors - at least I'll know where I'm going.

Re: Senior Ceilí Band Result

Bannerman, here are the results of the senior Ceili Band competition which finished about an hour ago:

1 Bhearthla Ui Fhlatharta Leixlip
2 Naithi Dublin
3 Na Comharsanna Beaumont

Hopefully we will see you in Tullamore, but we won't be able to go for the full week this year.

The flute and concertina couple.

Re: Anyone Going to the Leinster Fleadh?

Many thanks Southsider for the timely results. The competition must have been fierce as having heard Glen na Coille practicing, I was sure that they would have been placed. Anyway congratulations to Naithí, who have some great musicians amongst their number, for keeping the Dubs in the running for the coveted prize in Tullamore. Mind you if a Clare band qualifies next week at the Munster, I'll have divided loyalties!

As for the couple of attacks above on the committee for problems with signage, I think we should put this into perspective. Any Fleadh committee that can put on quality concerts as they did last week with the likes of Andy Irvine, Seán Ó Sé, Martin Donohoe, Bruce Scott, etc, etc is also deserving of a few plaudits!

I Look forward to seeing you both in Tullamore for the few tunes at the end of August.

Congratulations to the qualifiers from DN alias Clontarf glad to see the music continues to florish despite all that happened to your branch. Good luck in Tullamore!
