Re: Willie Clancy week very quiet

It doesn't seem unusually quiet to me. People head for the hills, the Bellbridge, Mullagh or the ceilis rather than stay in town like they used to and it has been like that for the past four years or so. The rain that started around five was a veritable deluge though.

Re: Willie Clancy week very quiet

It won't be quiet for long. I arrive to-morrow, armed only with a "lump of wood" on which I do a passing imitation of bones. One of those bits of wood you see on a ceilidh drum outfit, or attached to a washboard.

That will get things moving.

Haven't been in Milton Malbay since 1974. I expect it has changed somewhat.

Re: Willie Clancy week very quiet

My recollections of Clancy week all involve torrential rain. But then I always had a great time. I think the rain actually made it better. Is the 'people's kitchen' still there?

"Weather looks great for Catskills Irish Arts Week though!!"

I'm so mad I can't even afford (time wise) to go for a single day. Damn summer classes.

Re: Willie Clancy week very quiet

no, i've not been there for 14 years. I don't know how that has happened. One day it was 1994 the next it was 2008. I don't think the people's kitchen was there last time I was there actually, a pity cos it was always a great place (beyond the pub) to escape the p*ssing rain.

"By the way, the habit of desserting the metropolis of Miltown for outlying sessions has been going on for at least 20 years. Mullagh was always reputed to be the place where the quality hung out."

Inevitably, in the space of 20 years, the word is going to get around. The pubs in Mullagh have been packed out the last few times I've been there. A couple of the pubs have closed down in recent years, so there aren't as many places for people to go. Further out still, one of the two pubs in Coore closed a few years ago.

"Is the 'people's kitchen' still there?"

I'm not telling you.

Re: Willie Clancy week very quiet

I know people have been going to Daly, McCarthy's (and while they were still there Gleeson's. Looney's) or Mullagh, Ennistymon or St Bridget's Well, to escape the 'riff raff' but in the past you could always find some half decent music somewhere in Miltown, or just any music at all.. During the past four years or so even that seemed to have stopped with many pubs not having anything but drinkers in them.

And 'where the quality hang out' for fecksake., I hope that was meant in an ironic sense.

Re: Willie Clancy week very quiet

... 'the habit of desserting [sic] the metropolis of Miltown' just proves that Andy had it so right many years ago with 'in the sweet Miltown Malbay, it's there I'd love to be'!
