In a fleadh competition, how many times over should you play a slow air, I swear I have been in competitions where they are played about 5 times over and can get so boring, any ideas please!
I learned twice as a matter of course. However, in a concert or performance situation where the musician does several variations, more repeats would be determined by the player.
in the fleadh, you don't say if the purpose of the judging involved an evaluation of the player's variations, ornament etc.
In that circumstance, there would be a purpose to the repeating.
Thank you zippydw, its rare you get helpful advice on this site now! I plan on playing three times as to show my ornaments, variations, just wanted to know what people thought
Twice..but depends on the length of the slow air. For example, to have to listen to 'RosÃn Dubh' or 'An Chulain' three times. Miight be a bit painful for an adjudicator
Herself always says my advice is cryptic. For general purpose play, unless there were good reason as mentioned, twice is probably going to be more acceptable. First time through to present the tune to all of the otehr players or listener, the second time to do ornament and variations.
But then what usually happens if the tune hits it off with the other players, you won't stop the second time through and will end up playing it six or sevent times until some wise-a** yells 'Hup" and changes the key from D to A or some such and you get to do it all over again.

Re: Slow airs/songs
You have the rules and then you have music.
I admit, I dont like contests but sometimes they can be a good thing. If lilyot finds that the rules say "twice" then fine. My advice still works.
