Hi all
I'm new to this site and let me just say its an excellent resource for tunes
I'm wondering does anyone know any good tunes that would go well with Irish folk songs?
"The tamlin" goes well with "The Hills of Donegal" and the "Maid behind the bar "goes well with "The Craic was 90 in the Isle of Man"
"Battle Cry of Munster" and "Come out Ye Black and Tans". They're so alike (but different enough) that I've seen the title of the latter as alternative title for the first.
In our little group we like to find a tune that's the same key and rythm of the song. Then the tune can function as the intro, break, and out-tro.
Here are some we do:
Song: Peata Beag / Jig: Kevin Burke's Jig (Tonra's Jig)
Song: Gallant Murray / Reel: The Green Mountain
Song: Jack Haggery / Scottish 6/8 March: Farewell To The Creeks
Another arranging device is to compose a descant or counter-melody that is tuneful enough to stand on its own and be perceived as a tune in its own right. I wrote such a tune for Cliffs of Dooneen.
The intro and break are the countermelody played alone. Only after the break, during the last verse, is the countermelody played while the song is being sung. At this time the listener realises for the first time that the intro/break melody is actually a descant or countermelody to the melody of the song. It works great.
About all the people playing an up-tempo tune after a slow song, it doesn't take any creativity to stick a random jig or reel after a song. It does take some thought and work to find a jig or reel or whatever that really works with the song.

Speaking of sirens, wasn't Ulysses seduced into a state of mind in which he would gladly .............!
I do like the idea of playing a bit of tune within a song instead of noodling a solo.

Ned of the Hill (Slow Air) and song has the same start as The Lark on the strand jig. Makes a nice contrast.
