I'm trying to learn Jean's Reel and I'm in that mode where there just seems to be something magical about the tune. It's like it's got really deep emotion, or a hidden message encoded in the note sequences or something.
I used to feel this way about Slade's 'Cummon Feel The Noize' once so I know it will pass.
Anyone know any other tunes that have this deep magical effect - at least for a while?
The controller at Channel 4 is probably getting some great ideas for new programmes here.

"30 greatest living people-who-think-they're-great-but-they're-not"
The one good thing about thesession.org discussions these days is that I feel heaps younger when I read them and post on them, like I'm 5 years old and at school all over again. It keeps me feeling perpetually young.
My nomination is the Gustav Holst tune now set to the words "I Vow To Thee, My Country".
Of course it was not handed down to, or composed by, a traditional musician, but its ingredients entirely accord with those of Irish or UK trad tunes: Holst just assembled them before anon, or the tradition, did.
Silver Spear - reading The Guardian like tea-leaves possibly dates from the 70s-80s, when its articles frequently went into long illegible patches where the lettering was mixed up, if not quite random. Hence its persisting alternative title, The Grauniad.
I think that "king of the faeries" (long dance) is a pretty magical tune. But perhaps the most magical thing I have ever played is the low whistle opening to "lift the wings". You tube it, it's fabby!
Nah Slade did it first... Noddy Holder - he's been advertising Nobby's Nuts here in the UK... looks a bit like the sweaty bloke with the big hat on 'Time Team'.
Phew... that's the last time I'll eat cheese before bedtime.

I like Jean's Reel too... specially the way Natalie MacMaster plays it!
I've always liked the tune 'Dance of the Honeybees' but there are WAY too many great tunes out there to name them all.
Conan... can't wait for the 'greates living people" thread!! Ba ha ha ha!

Would that be Jean's reel (the reel) or Jean's reel as in the Headlands strathspey (both done nicely by Natalie McM)?

Re: Most magical trad tune (of all time...)
Anyway, it's not so much the tune as how it's played.

I really like "When sick is it tea you want"
When played a little slower than usual it has an almost lullaby quality.
