Re: What's the difference between Sligo and Sliabh Luachra polkas?
From www.irishtune.info :
' I am biased towards Kerry and Cork-style dance polkas as the definitive Irish polka (examples: #974, #1062). Nevertheless, I have included here both "Sligo polkas" (also known as "double polkas" or "Clare polkas"), which are much more march-like (examples: #2146, #464), as well as the old long dances (see "Set dance" above) which are in march-like rhythms'.

As the good doctor intimated above it will become abundantly clear if you try to dance to them . The set dances from Sligo and those from Kerry/Cork are quite different like wise the tunes
Re: What's the difference between Sligo and Sliabh Luachra polkas?
A lot of the so-called "Sligo polkas" are really continental dance tunes picked up and recorded by Sligo musicians in New York.
The barndance (aka German schottische), mazurka and varsovienne ("Shoe the Donkey") were all popular two-hand ballroom dances in the 1920s and '30s. They were played and danced by the Irish, but also by Czechs, Germans, Scandinavians and other immigrant groups. So it's only natural that the tunes that suited those dances don't necessarily work for Sliabh Luachra polka sets.

Re: What's the difference between Sligo and Sliabh Luachra polkas?
If I remember right the so called Sligo polka in fact is a barndance and not a polka.
Next one please.

Oh, it's me again....! Suddenly remembered the so called Fred Finn's polka is listed as a barndance on this site:
http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/7317
That's where I got it from. Not sure whether this suits in general though.
So: next one please.

A couple good old northern polka sets:
Tom Morrison:

Michael Coleman and Tom Morrison:

Jason, I think you've got some good Sliabh Luachra examples already, so I won't worry about that.
As you play for sets more, I think you'll notice that sometimes a more "northern" polka won't work particularly well for a Kerry/Sliabh Luachra set.

A lot of Sliabh Luachra (and Sligo/Leitrim) polkas are really Scottish tunes.
