Box+Flute Reel

Box+Flute Reel

hi folks.
anyone got any suggestions for a good reel for a box(button) + flute duet. Its for the fleadh, so any tune that goes down below low d can't be used. we played lord mcdonalds in our county fleadh and got slated for playing something that goes too low for the flute to reach, so we're looking for a really good reel for the provincial fleadh. thanks.

Domhniaill ( I hope I've spelled that correctly :/), plays flute and box, I expect he will come up with a couple of good suggestions.

The Scholar/ The Heathery Breeze.

And also...

...The few Reels I play both on box and flute, not only because of my limited box ability but mostly because I never tire of them:

The Shaskeen/ Reevey's (the ubiquitous one - The Hunter's House?)

Ships are a-Sailing/Pigeon on the Gate #2/Monaghan Twig

Contradicion Reel (big enough tune on it's own!) In fact, if I were to choose just one it would be this. Tricky, though.

Best of Luck,

DANNY.

Re: Box+Flute Reel

Josie McDermott's
The Moving Cloud - even though this one does go down below bottom D you can pitch on the flute and it'll sound OK.
McFadden's Handsome daughter. [in either G or A]

Given that the rules limit you to playing only one tune through twice I would suggest a three or four part tune to give the adjuducator enough time to listen to your style. Both the last two fit the bill here.

At the end of the day it should be a tune that you both really enjoy and will get into the swing together on - that more impressive than the actual tune selection.

Re: Box+Flute Reel

Agree with Breandan - a 3 or 4 part reel will/should get more credit than a 2-part. Best suggestion I can come up with is "The Gooseberry Bush" - the 2 Hernon brothers recorded it on box & flute years ago. Great stuff. You might also check out the list of tunes on last year's CD by Christy Barry & Conor McCarthy - (flute & box) -you might get a few ideas there.
