A legend is gone, such a shame. But on the other hand it's great that he had such a long life and gave so much to the music.
As someone with arthritis at a young age I worry about having to give up the fiddle, but seeing him play such fantastic music with joints that worn out gives me hope.
Thanks cStu for that link. An amazing musician. I only wish I had the chance to hear him in person, perhaps even share a tune with him as Frankie Gavin did in the clip. Are there more video clips of him? I can only hope some magically appear.....
One of my favorite fiddlers ever... Sure wish I'd gotten to hear him live. I understood Martin Hayes' playing much better after I heard Paddy Canny's music.
I've been away and just saw that Paddy Canny passed away a few days back. You can read about it at the Clare People online. He was one of the founding members of the Tulla, I recall seeing him with them several years ago, both here in the states and at ceilidhs in Ireland. Lovely player and by all accounts, a lovely man. He and P. Joe are surely playing the Humours of Tulla up above!
Paddy Canny RIP
Paddy Canny RIP
I have just had the sad news of the death of Paddy Canny aged 89. May he rest in peace.

Re: Paddy Canny RIP
Sorry to hear that, I had heard he had had a heart attack last month that would likely be the beginning of the end. Sad he's gone.

Re: Paddy Canny RIP
Very sad news indeed. One of the last original Clare fiddlers has left us. Thankfully, with a great legacy and many recordings still available.

Re: Paddy Canny RIP
He was indeed a great musician and from the tales I've heard a wonderful man. One of the last of a generation of giants. Thank you Mister Canny.

Re: Paddy Canny RIP
Some of the best playing I've heard from Paddy Canny is on an old privately made field recording in the 70's, the man was a genius.
A nice way to pay tribute to him tonight might be to play these two tunes written for him by Charlie Lennon and Frankie Gavin respectively.
