Tune Set - Polka

Tune Set - Polka

I am a novice/intermedate player. I am trying to work up a set for my local session.
I play the Ballydesmond (#2) polka pretty well but am struggling to find a couple more polkas to make a three piece set.
I think that "Downey's" might match well but am looking for suggestions and advice as to filling out a nice set and the order to play them in.
Can you (all) help?
note: I would like to stay away from Hindu or Tibetan folk music...too much controversy at this site for that.
Thanks.

Re: Tune Set - Polka

Kind of obvious but the Ballydesmond #1 goes really well with #2. The two are often if not usually played together at sessions. Stick pretty much any other polka on the end of those two for a nice set.

Re: Tune Set - Polka

Ballydesmond #3 is not too bad after #2, either.

Re: Tune Set - Polka

You know, I sometimes get ideas for sets by looking up the tune here on the database which lists many of the recordings on which the song appears. Then look at the individual recordings to see what tunes they used for the set. It's a starting point!

Re: Tune Set - Polka

Slightly off-topic but one of my favourite polka sets is Sweeny's (played in key of "A"), Denis Murphy's and the Scartaglen. These were recorded as a set by the Chieftan's on their second (and probably best) LP back in 1969.
