I have a 19 fret O'Neill's tenor banjo and I keep getting a rattle on the A string when I play. I have re-strung it many times, reset the bridge and tail gate but nothing seems to cure it. It kind of sounds like fret buzz but it is clearing all the strings. Any ideas?
Could be a bridge buzz, wrong angle to the A string slot in the bridge. Try a scrap of paper no wider than the bridge under the A string in its bridge slot. If that stops it, that's the prob.
Does it have a truss rod? I've had a rattling truss rod in a mandolin and a guitar and it sounds like fret buzz but you only hear it on certain notes. Tightening it just a tad might cure it.
Thanks for the advice folks -I think it is buzzing at the neck as I stuck a little piece of tissue into the neck slot and it seems to have corrected it somewhat -I'll have to experiment more to get it right. Pesky things been buzzing so long I barely hear it anymore...
I had a mystery buzz for a few weeks and went through the usual check list of suspects ( strings, neck alignment, head, bridge, nut, tail-piece) only to eventually find a few loose nuts around the tuning pegs. D'oh! problem solved. Start at one end of the banjo eliminating suspects and working your way to the other end. The guilty party eventually confesses.
