Alan Morrisroe interview archived on WFUV.org one more week

The Alan Morrisroe interview by Kathleen Biggins is still available at the www.wfuv.org website for another week I believe.

If you love old style melodeon playing (he often has a two row but only plays one at a time, melodeon style) he is brilliant, and also is a great historian, especially about the NYC immigrant players, P.J. Conlon, Morrison, Coleman and others, and goes into that a bit. He has some rare and unusual tunes, and settings of tunes that were never subject to "the folk process", that he learned from his grandmother, who learned from the old folks in Co. Mayo, and so these would be close to 200 year old settings on most. He never left his family for music and rarely went to sessions, he didn't need to, so the style stayed pure, and he fell through the cracks all these years. It's very interesting, and I always learn a lot about the music listening to him.

here is the direct link, it takes a little sifting for it otherwise:

There are also three youtubes of Alan, he's a wild player!

I've got a problem with the streamguys link. All that happens is that it devolves to http://wfuv.streamguys.us/archive/8108.asx, and then all I hear is a voice asking for donations to help run the website.

OK....let that run out, then a new one should come on in a few seconds or maybe a little more.... mine pops back on it's own and starts the real show. just give it a little time, see if it comes back, if not I will let them know.

PS.... it seems to have been moved to the second half of the program, it's an hour. On the air it came in the first hour. If you leave it run, it should eventually come on.

Great interview I'm going to buy a CD from Iris of a concert. Very refreshing playing from Mayo ,my Gran Mary McGreal played melodeon for dancing ( born 1870s). I knew Rose Murphy who was Peter Conlon's sister ( Alan is researching him) Rose lived in Maltby SouthYorkshire whre she had married a miner ( there is a big Irish community there). She had a 1970s record on Topic - A MillTown Lass, she played melodeon and fiddle, so there's a link.

Mike.... you have spoken to Alan right? I am getting senile, I remember you emailed your story to me, but have you been in touch with Alan?

I am racing deadlines for some work now, the kind that pays the bills, not the fun kind....and have the Alan concert EQ'd pretty well, and need to cut it into tracks. It will happen in the next few weeks.

He is such a character, I almost wish we had filmed the whole thing, he's a natural comedian, absolutely a riot, people get a kick out of him. It's all very upbeat and people get happy around him .....and the music is great too.

He's all about preserving this old style and old tunes, very dedicated. The CD will be ready for his next trek over here, and there should be a bunch of CD release parties.

I have learned so much about the music by listening to him and playing with him, it's forced me to look at the music differently, realize the fragility of the old ways, that fall out of use. This is why the CD is so important to Alan, getting these tunes and settings documented , he has some very obscure tunes that may otherwise be lost. He's also an incredibly dynamic player who should himself be documented.

Mike... do you know about his counterpart up in Mayo, Paddy Joe Tighe? He's another one like Alan, maybe a bit quieter I gather, I have only ever spoken to him briefly on the phone. Another melodeon player, and fabulous singer.
