Pipes??

I'm lookin 4 a set of uilleann pipes and i'm confused as to where to start. Has any1 heard of Robbie Hughes (hope the name is right) as a pipe maker?? I tink he's based in northern Ireland. Also where's the best place to start with pipes?? Should I go for a practice set or try get my hands on a full set?

Re: Pipes??

And a brilliant piper!

Start here: http://www.pipers.ie/

There may even be a pipers group in your immediate area, or a lone piper you can share your passion with and get some added insight... Good luck!

Re: Pipes??

Howdy Ceol!
It seems that Mr. Hughes makes bagpipes, not uilleann.

Re: Pipes??

Mr. Hughes does make Uilleann pipes, a piper I now owns a 7/8 set by him. But I'd rather go for another maker, she's been waiting for almost a year now since she first asked him for a bass regulator and he hasn't even managed to send her an e-mail how much it would cost by now. And the set itself, while not that bad isn't great either.

Re: Pipes??

That would be "a piper I know"

Re: Pipes??

Plan a trip up to Dublin and set aside some time to visit the NPU folks, it will also give you an opportunity to listen to and try some different pipes. Take your time, if your serious. You want to have an instrument that will hold your attention, pipe and reed. The usual is to start with a practice set, then a half set, then a full set ~ the later tending to be considered somewhere further down the line, usually measured in years...

Re: Pipes??

Yes, get to Dublin and NPU. Martin Preshaw made my 1/2 set and he's in Fermanagh

Re: Pipes??

If the interest is a healthy seed, the NPU folk, all characters as you might imagine, will nurture your passion.

Re: Pipes??

I agree with everyone who says get to NPU. They will send you off in the right directuin,

Everyone I know who plays a Robbie Hugh set likes it. I myself can't speak for it as if I've heard one, I can't recall what it sounds like. At any rate, I'd strongly recommend starting with a practice set. You wouldn't want to invest in a full set (or even half set) until you know you're committed and also it;s a far better thing to face drones and even worse, regulators, when you've gotten reasonably competent on the chanter.

This happens a lot. I think *wow* this is a popular thread. Then I arrive, and see that 11 of the 18 replies are from C. Which is amusing, to watch him talk to himself...offering useful yet discrete information!
