A very unique American Bluegrass/traditional music group recently toured Ireland. They are called "Crooked Still". They've produced a few albums. I was wondering if anyone saw or heard anything about them, or perhaps read a review. I happened to connect to an American radio program via the internet that featured some of their music. The cello makes this group riminiscent of at least one of Yo-Yo-Ma's more recent, musical excursions into American traditional music, "Appalachian Journey". I was favorably impressed by what I heard.
great bunch
Aoife is a great singer, well they are all incredible musicians.
they did a great gig in Belfast on Open House festival last year
Aoife was singing with The Duhks - another great young band.
check out their website and myspace
www.myspace.com/crookedstill
www.crookedstill.com/
and just can't wait their new album that will be released next week
I've got their album 'Shaken by a Low Sound' -brilliant - would love to see them live. Great for yowling spontaneous harmonies along to in the car. What a fantastic voice that girl has -very controlled. Some bizarre lyrics here and there, which all adds to the entertainment...!
I have not seen the group, but seen Rashaad Eggleston, the cellist, with other groups, and he is truly a world class talent. To hear him in a more traditional setting, find some of the records he recorded with young fiddler Hannekah Cassels (I probably spelled that last name wrong). And the singer is the daughter of Brian O'Donovan, the host of a popular trad radio show on WGBH in Boston.
The cellist Rushad Eggleston left the group in late 2007. Since his departure a new cellist (Tristan Clarridge) and fiddler (Brittany Haas) has joined. They appear on the new album ''Still Crooked''.
They rock! and it's Rushad Eggleston, i've seen that misspelt several times on this site. Anyway, he's actually not in Crooked Still any more, which is a shame because I love his playing style. They've replaced him with cellist Tristan Clarridge (talented, but not Rushad) and fiddler Brittany Haas (on 5-string fiddle. Her sister is the amazing cellist Natalie, who tours with Alasdair Fraser). Saw them last year at Shrewsbury Folk Fest, and a couple of weeks ago at the Cluny in Newcastle. Their new album Still Crooked is pretty damn cool.
