Who is going to Catskills Irish Arts Week, and what are you taking?
Who is going to Catskills Irish Arts Week, and what are you taking?
Just getting curious who will be there this summer. Some great teachers, Kevin Burke, Alec Finn, Mary Bergin.... almost can't believe it!
What classes are you taking? the concerts should be great too especially the big Saturday one, all day, for those just coming for the weekend. It's getting close, but can barely wait!
Re: Who is going to Catskills Irish Arts Week, and what are you taking?
Am taking John Wynne's advanced flute class. Have been surprised to find that many people haven't heard of him. Have had his CD for years. Def looking forward to another year of not going to bed until after the sun has risen
Re: Who is going to Catskills Irish Arts Week, and what are you taking?
I had originally signed up for alec finn's bouzouki class because they didn't have a mandolin class, but I understand that's been changed, and i'll have to fix it when i get there. F. McCormick is down for mandolin..... my husband is signed up to take paul degrae's and pat egan's guitar classes
Re: Who is going to Catskills Irish Arts Week, and what are you taking?
I'm in Kevin Burke's class in the morning and Patrick Ourceau's fiddle class in the afternoon. My wife is taking flute and beginning box,but I can't remember what teachers she has. It's our first time, so I can't wait!
It was really hard to decide on classes, as I'd love to take classes on tin whistle, banjo and dadgad guitar, too. Those are all self taught and I'm sure I could use some help. I hope to run into some of you.
Re: Who is going to Catskills Irish Arts Week, and what are you taking?
I'm taking Damien Connolly's box class in the morning and just discovered that Martin Donohoe won't be there. Disappointing, but I'll have to figure something out for the afternoon.
Re: Who is going to Catskills Irish Arts Week, and what are you taking?
Damien Connolly's box class in the a.m.- see you there, boxielady! Haven't signed up for an afternoon class yet- thought I might need the box practice time. I might sign up for Mike McHale's whistle class, since he's supposed to be wonderful!
Re: Who is going to Catskills Irish Arts Week, and what are you taking?
I hope all of you have a wonderful time. I can't get away during the week, so instead I will drive down for the Rockland County Feis
(http://www.rocklandcountyfeis.com/) and visit Mom while I'm there.
Re: Who is going to Catskills Irish Arts Week, and what are you taking?
I'm taking my fiddle - and a TENT. I can't find a room 'close in'.
(No room at the inn.... that has a familiar ring to it....)
I'll check the website - maybe a last minute scramble will be productive!?
Lodging woes aside, Iris - are you doing your jewelry class or
similar this year?
(Do ya think there'd be any interest in a knotwork engraving class
next year?)
((Right - back to work...I'm on the clock today))
Re: Who is going to Catskills Irish Arts Week, and what are you taking?
Hi Fr. Jack.... yes, I will be doing ancient style sand/clay castings of knotwork in silver which will be made into jewelry of the student's choice, a pendant, a pin, whatever. It's the technique used by "the Ancients" which included the early Celtic Gold and Silversmiths. It is simple enough for even teens to do, and we get really classy looking pieces, not at all rough or homemade looking.
Linda Hickman will teach another jewelry class, Catherine Crowe will do enameling, there is also painting and stone carving, other arts classes, as well as children's programs. This is so non playing friends and family can have things to do also. Check the site for the whole list.
I hope you take the class, and if you ever did teach engraving anywhere I'd sign up if timing worked out! Send me some pix or links off group if you can, engraving has always eluded me and I love it. It is quickly becoming a lost art too, they do it with lasers so often these days. It would be great if you could pass those skills along. It's amazing work, especially the knotwork. I actually made my own gravers at jewelry repair school years ago. Maybe you wouldn't mind staying after class a little if I bring the gravers and show me a few little things?
And as for the rooms you can still find them, I know someone who booked Hogans just last week. If you go a little further out should be easier.
And you play fiddle too, right? My class is just the morning, leaves you fiddle class time in the afternoon if you like.
I am working today too... or maybe I shouldn't be telling you that! Anyway, hope you can make it!
Re: Who is going to Catskills Irish Arts Week, and what are you taking?
I will be there. John Wynne is a great player and teacher (I was in his class at Willie Week 2001), but since I am a convicted stalker of Catherine McEvoy I'm required by my plea agreement to take her class, although I must remain at least 15 feet away from her at all times and only speak when spoken to. Still it's very much worth it. Also I have had countless opportunities over the years to sit with the great Mike Rafferty for a week and have never done it. If I'm going to continue to call myself a flute player, I need to do that now. So there's my day at East Durham. I'm looking forward to lots of nice concert sets from the combinations of Catherine McEvoy and her brother John, and from John McEvoy with John Wynne. The recent albums from both of those pairings are among my all-time favorites.
Re: Who is going to Catskills Irish Arts Week, and what are you taking?
Iris, I think Catherine is well aware of me, since she's had to watch over her shoulder for me in places as varied as Miltown Malbay, Feakle, Seattle and East Durham. I think it was the encounter in the swimming pool at Boston College that finally triggered the restraining order, though.
Yes, hope to see you in a session too. We did meet briefly once already in East Durham a couple of years ago at a session in McGrath's you were at with Linda Hickman. (Which probably doesn't narrow it down much for you, right?)
Re: Who is going to Catskills Irish Arts Week, and what are you taking?
Hi John.... I'd likely recognize you but am useless on names! usually you can spot me a mile away, tons of curly hair, ala Martin Hayes. Guitar of course too is a giveaway, so say hi if we cross paths again.
I do remember that night in McGrath's, if it was the same night I am thinking of, some wild session, with the Kane sisters, loads of people... ended up just a few late, late, late.

Re: Who is going to Catskills Irish Arts Week, and what are you taking?
Sound great, all of it!
Can't get much better.
Also, I know some people who are still getting rooms right in the midst of all the action just in the last week or so.
Shall try to behave a little and get some sleep, but it's hard!

Catherine McEvoy -- Intermediate (a.m.) & Advanced (p.m.) flute (primarily "just listening" in the advanced class, I'm guessing).
