Whiskey in the jar again

Whiskey in the jar again

I know, you shouldn't ask about it but...
again and again I am forced to play this "Witj-thing" with my band.
Any suggestions about tunes you can play between the verses?
This would make the experience much more bearable!

Re: Whiskey in the jar again

I've heard a set of the Merry Blacksmith and The Banshee or Mrs. McLeod's played in the middle

Re: Whiskey in the jar again

Let your tune players come up with tunes on the fly, different one between each verse. They could just shout a key. That should keep it interesting.

Re: Whiskey in the jar again

Just start Whiskey and after the first time through, go into something else right away. That's what we used to do in my wedding band whenever the bride requested "Celebration"; a few obligatory bars then off to something else.

Re: Whiskey in the jar again

How about polkas? Whiskey in the Jar seems to have a 2/4 "feeling" to it , although I'm not sure what the time signature is. Salmon tails up the river perhaps.A march might sound good to, depending on the speed of the song.

Re: Whiskey in the jar again

IMO there's only one way to play 'whiskey in the jar' and that is to emulate Thin Lizzy's version! Someone could belt out the guitar riffs on the fiddle.

Re: Whiskey in the jar again

The singer in a group I played with sang the song in D, so I use to stick in The 'Grand Old Dame (D) on the box, finishing off by copying the the first bit of the guitar riff to take him back to the song.

Re: Whiskey in the jar again

I always loved that song, until I got old enough to start frequenting pubs...

Re: Whiskey in the jar again

I think I've heard the song interspersed effectively with the reel Man Of Aran, or parts of it. That would be, WITJ in D, Man Of Aran in B Minor, or with the same relationship if played at another pitch.

Re: Whiskey in the jar again

We do the "Thin Lizzy" version at gigs, complete with electric guitar, courtesy of my child.

By far the best version.
