Re: Big fish little pond, or little fish big pond?

Definitely little fish in a big pond as there are more opportunities to be had in a big pond.

Re: Big fish little pond, or little fish big pond?

I will always be a little fish, of modest abilities, so little ponds suit me quite nicely, thank you.

Re: Big fish little pond, or little fish big pond?

I like being a little fish in a big pond most of the times. I like to sit a tune out and listen sometimes. Easily done if you're a guppy in the scheme of things.

Re: Big fish little pond, or little fish big pond?

Sometimes being a big fish in little pond is a great opportunity to give back to the music, lead and add a lot to the scene. Being a little fish is great if the big pond is a great place to learn from those further along than you--can be both inspiring and deflating (only have another 526 tunes to learn....).

Re: Big fish little pond, or little fish big pond?

I'd be a poisonous jellyfish in the ocean - one of those ones that looks like a fibre optic lamp with all those crazy lights. I'd float around with all my mates, stinging people's legs for fun.

Re: Big fish little pond, or little fish big pond?

The problem is, if you get too big, you'll outgrow your pond, no matter what the size. And then you'll get complacent, for lack of inspiration (or competition, for that matter).

Re: Big fish little pond, or little fish big pond?

Being a fish would be anatomically inconvenient for a fiddle player.

Re: Big fish little pond, or little fish big pond?

As for me - medium fish, medium pond. I like to sometimes become a little fish and go along to a big pond and watch how the real big fish do it...but it has to be Pacific. I don't care too much to be a big, or pretending to be big, fish in a little pond. I have seen this too often and it looks sad and pathetic, one-sided, dull and uninteresting, and not really a session anyway.

Re: Big fish little pond, or little fish big pond?

I'm stuck in a tiny pond, and it's all "Do It Yourself". I think that makes me a mosquito attempting to colonize a small puddle.

Nice to go to the big city too and swim in the sea too. I'd have to say I like it all.

And I nearly drowned.

Re: Big fish little pond, or little fish big pond?

At this moment it must be time to recall the great words of Frankie Howerd:

Down in the meadow in a little bitty pool
Swam three little fishies and a mama fishie too
"Swim" said the mama fishie, "Swim if you can"
And they swam and they swam all over the dam

Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
And they swam and they swam all over the dam

"Stop" said the mama fishie, "or you will get lost"
The three little fishies didn't wanna be bossed
The three little fishies went off on a spree
And they swam and they swam right out to the sea

Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
And they swam and they swam right out to the sea

"Whee!" yelled the little fishies, "Here's a lot of fun
We'll swim in the sea till the day is done"
They swam and they swam, and it was a lark
Till all of a sudden they saw a shark!

Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Boop boop dit-tem dat-tem what-tem Chu!
Till all of a sudden they saw a shark!

"Help!" cried the little fishies, "Gee! look at all the whales!"
And quick as they could, they turned on their tails
And back to the pool in the meadow they swam
And they swam and they swam back over the dam

Re: Big fish little pond, or little fish big pond?

I'ld like to be the same size as the other fish, and then the size of the pond doesn't matter.
But I don't go to enough other ponds...

Re: Big fish little pond, or little fish big pond?

interesting responses. though i'm not an accomplished player, i'm often the biggest fish in a smallish pond, because i'm the first tunester to show up, and i've been there for years. that's been good for me, because i've gotten experience playing out, and i've also learned that you can sound much more knowledgeable and skilled if you're the one choosing the tunes. sometimes it gets tiresome though, and i don't get the tutelege or the inspiration that i might get in a bigger pond. the kicker though, is when a few really hot players show up and boot the session into high gear. at those times, i'm confident of my place there, AND i get the thrills and new stuff -- glorious! but whatever happens, i get to sit with friends for a few hours, doing what we all love to do, with a beer at my elbow.

Re: Big fish little pond, or little fish big pond?

Even though one of the instruments I play is a Big Fish (a three-quarter size bass fiddle), I am still a little fish in a little pond. I like my situation and am satisfied with it.
