Two Seamus Egan's?

Two Seamus Egan's?

I think I read before that there are two Irish musicians by the name of Seamus Egan. Is this correct? I know of one from Philadelphia who plays with the band Solas and plays banjo, flute, pipes and probably guitar [not too sure.]

If there is another one, I have a feeling he is also a banjo player. Can anyone help me out?

Not that I know of but possible - there are at least 3 Mick O'Connors!

Re: Two Seamus Egan's?

From Chris Smith's article (Mel Bay's 'Banjo Lessons'):

".........McKenna.s growly tone on Dubliners LP.s was a strong influence on several generations of Irish tenor players, including Kieran Hanrahan of Stockton.s Wing, Charlie Piggott of De Danann, and Mick Moloney of Green Fields of America. These in turn opened the door for other tenor players including Seamus "East Coast" Egan of Solas (using the high-C tuning), Seamus "West Coast" Egan (a different person, playing GDAE), ....."

Re: Two Seamus Egan's?

Seamus Egan the whistle player, flute player and banjo player are the same guy. He plays all these instruments in his first album.

Re: Two Seamus Egan's?

I'm not sure if it's still available from his website, but "In Your Ear" is a great CD; he's an amazing musician - plays mandolin and tenor guitar on a few of the tracks too.

Re: Two Seamus Egan's?

I've heard the non-Solas chap referred to as "not-so-famous-Seamus."

Frankie Gavin is the man.

Re: Two Seamus Egan's?

Rumour has it that Seamus of Solas dropped his fada for contractual reasons to distinguish himself from his west coast namesake.

Without Frankue Irish music would be bereft of some of its best anagrams, viz: -

freaking vain;
vain gin freak;
Viking ear fan;
Viking era fan;
fair gin knave;
vain fake grin;
fear vain king;
I gave Finn ark;
naive rag fink .... ad infinitem.

My favourite anagram, however, is Paddy Moloney - play my old one.

Re: Two Seamus Egan's?

True story - the lawyer for the famous Seamus demanded that the recording label for the infamous Seamus cease and desist using his name. Only in America... LOL

Re: Two Seamus Egan's?

This reminds of Father Ted and more specifically Father 'Windy' Shepherd Henderson, of whom there are apparently at least four. lol.

Re: Two Seamus Egan's?

Hey Kenny... I wrote the second verse.

When Irish music is playing
and player’s names you are saying
it might seem quite confusing
you might as well just be choosing
but there is one name that stands the test
and it stands out from all the rest

One Frankie Gavin... etc.

(Somebody could shout out "Noel Hill" in between lines on the chorus.)
