My band needs a name, and we're looking to YOU for suggestions!
My band needs a name, and we're looking to YOU for suggestions!
Yes, we are so going to be the next Lúnasa, so think what an honour it would be to think of a name for us!
Ahem. Yah there's three of us, and none of us can decide/agree on a name that works. We play about 40% Irish, 40% Jewish and 20% other random folk music. Thinking of entering for the BBC Young Folk Awards (no idea how we'll do, but should be fun...).
Between us, we play fiddle, high & low whistles, clarinet, saxophone, piano, guitar, bass guitar, double bass, bodhrán and djembe. Not the purest of drops, but I like to think it sounds good.
There's a few categories the possible names seem to come in:
1) Geeky maths/physics/computing terms and puns. Like "The Algorhythms", or "Schrödinger's Cats".
2) Names from Irish or Jewish mythology. What would be really cool is to have a name in Irish that sounds like a different word in Hebrew, or vice-versa. But I doubt there's many people in the world who are fluent in both Hebrew and Irish (though it would be insanely cool)!
3) Names that have absolutely nothing to do with anything at all, but are just funny. "Nights in Shining Amour" is one that I thought of, "Hardcore Prawn" is another, courtesy of Mehitabel23....
Re: My band needs a name, and we're looking to YOU for suggestions!
riada - It was "Sihon King of the Amorites and Og the King of Bashan..." Neither was Hebrew, they were leaders of enemy peoples whom the Hebrews defeated.
Re: My band needs a name, and we're looking to YOU for suggestions!
Where are you from? Where are you based? Where do you practice? All these have been the forming of band names, though some are possibly best forgotten ....
Re: My band needs a name, and we're looking to YOU for suggestions!
"a name in Irish that sounds like a different word in Hebrew, or vice-versa"
Try an Irish Jesuit. There's likely to be at least one who is fluent in Irish and Hebrew.
Re: My band needs a name, and we're looking to YOU for suggestions!
You're asking us to do your work for you ?
Enough already.
Sit in a circle, with you preferred choice of recreational intoxicants, legal or otherwise, brainstorm all evening, memorise the whole list, and go to bed.
In the morning you should all rise, and, as one man, cry "What the F*** did we do last night ?", or maybe, instead, you'll have an inspiration.
I did something similar to find the name of my band, and it turns out there's a Canadian band of the same name as us, but they don't play dances, so no confusion there.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just came back to this, and I must say, some of these names are so bad they're good. I think we may still have a long way to go, however. All three of us seem to have differing opinions as to what kind of name it should be.
We're from North London, if it helps. We're 17-18 years old, and between the three of us we probably have a good few miles worth of hair...
Re: My band needs a name, and we're looking to YOU for suggestions!
Celter Schmelter isn use by a Klezmer fiddle/cello duo in Edinburgh (formerly Celtica Schmeltica) . Just saw a similar suggestion above so thought I'd mention it.
Re: My band needs a name, and we're looking to YOU for suggestions!
This is Hilarious! I think that I'm out of my league, but...
Something like this has already been suggested, but about anything that begins with "O'" or "Mc", such as "The O'Kleznicks" or "The McBernstein Brothers".

Re: My band needs a name, and we're looking to YOU for suggestions!
Hey Joe CSS-Regarding your point #2: I can't find it now, but somewhere recently I came across a thread containing a flame about the "Sons of Aaron", and about how someone brought the harp into Ireland. "Aaron" vs "Erin", get it? I'm sorry; it's REALLY lame, I know.
We're all having WAY too much fun with this! I'll get my coat. . .
Re: My band needs a name, and we're looking to YOU for suggestions!
Whoooooooo!! Broke the 100-post barrier!
No, unfortunately there are no squeezy things in our line-up. It's one of our greatest failings. We all wish we could play something squeezy, but to our great shame, none of us can.
I very much like Sodom and Begorrah!
And I'm intrigued by the Erin/Aaron thing. Sons of Erin? Farewell to Aaron? Or something...
Re: My band needs a name, and we're looking to YOU for suggestions!
Farewell to Aaron or something? The mind reels. . .
If you find out what the Sons of Aaron/Irish connection is, I'd like to know, as now I can't find the reference.
I like Sodom and Begorrah, too.

Re: My band needs a name, and we're looking to YOU for suggestions!
As a southern Jew who plays Irish music --y'all are sick! I wa partial to Jacvkie Mason's Apron myself. Of course, then I looked in McNeill's and Iwas struck with such names as
1) The Cliffs of Mohel
2) The Boys of Ballin' Challah
3) the Boys of the Lox
4) Planxty Mogen David
Re: My band needs a name, and we're looking to YOU for suggestions!
Of course the Boys of the Lough used to play Kenny Goldsteins' Reel - The Morning Jew ( Robin Morton actually said that on stage in front of him ).
I'm coming to the opinion that you shouldn't use any of these names, especially the puns.
I don't know whether that will stop you, but I might suggest that you consider who is the audience that you are trying to attract with the name.
Can't you just find something that says "We're sh1thot and folkie" without needing multi-ethnic punning to prove it ?
Re: My band needs a name, and we're looking to YOU for suggestions!
Guernsey Pete - p*ss off back to between England and France. . They are not racial slurs but ethnic traits we are having a bit of fun with which no one is over stepping here Jaysus (allah - jahova etc) wind yer neck in and relax. If I got annoyed with all the anti Irish sentimants I've encountered I would be as sad as you.
How about 'The L'Chaim Sangwidges'?

Actually... wouldn't Mandelbrot's reel just repeat over and over again with no finish?

As a southern Jew who plays Irish music --y'all are sick! I wa partial to Jacvkie Mason's Apron myself. Of course, then I looked in McNeill's and Iwas struck with such names as
1) The Cliffs of Mohel
2) The Boys of Ballin' Challah
3) the Boys of the Lox
4) Planxty Mogen David

Of course the Boys of the Lough used to play Kenny Goldsteins' Reel - The Morning Jew ( Robin Morton actually said that on stage in front of him ).
I'm coming to the opinion that you shouldn't use any of these names, especially the puns.
I don't know whether that will stop you, but I might suggest that you consider who is the audience that you are trying to attract with the name.
Can't you just find something that says "We're sh1thot and folkie" without needing multi-ethnic punning to prove it ?
