I know a lot of people cringe at the mention of the 5-string. However, as both a tenor banjo player and 5-string clawhammer player, i was wondering for a while how i cud combine both styles on the one machine.
I love the old time sound and feel of clawhammer, and have recently been putting some reels onto the clawhammer style. However, jigs are much more diificult, so it was always a necessary hassle to have to carry both tenor and 5-string to sessions (i bet there's some of u wud love that, eh?!!)
So, basically, last night i discovered, while playing the 5-string, thinking of how to retune it to a tenor banjo style, i put the capo on the second fret, aEAC#e, retuned to the Double D tuning of aDADe, then tuned the second D to e, expecting it to snap. But it didn't! So now i have the guts of a tenor banjo DAe, on my 5-string, and don't have to carry around two banjos all the time, rather just the 5-string and retune it.
Now, that's my bit of news. Does anyone else tune like that?
No but I recently tried tuning my guitar to DGDGAE which gives you GDAE on strings 5421. Fingerings are a bit of a stretch for me at the moment though.
mike floorstand,why not dgddae,tuning the g down to d.
copo 24 you will probably be ok as long as youare using lighter gauge strings.
might be agood idea to use a first string gauge on your second string.dick miles
