Composers with no tunebooks

Composers with no tunebooks

I'm making a list [for my own interest] of tunes written by musicians who have not published their tunes in books. I don't know of all these musicians but know some. So far the list includes:

Finbarr Dwyer, Maurice Lennon, Josie McDermott, Michael Gorman, Brendan McGlinchy and Martin Mulhaire.

It's possible that some of the above do have tunebooks that I'm not aware of though. I'm just looking for your suggestions in providing names of composers without tunebooks and ones with them. I know the following have published their tunes:

Paddy O'Brien [R.I.P], Ed Reavy, Vincent Broderick, Josephine Keegan

There's way more out there but that's what I have off the top of my head.

Re: Composers with no tunebooks

Paddy,

I think you've set yourself a never-ending task here.

Think of all the tunes ascribed to Jackson, all those in the O'Neill and Breathnach collections named after a particular person, and hundreds, possibly thousands more.

However, I'll give you one name to add to your list - Tommy Peoples.

Re: Composers with no tunebooks

Yes, but many tunes in O'Neill and Breathnach's collections have unknown composers. I'm talking about tunes with known composers.

Re: Composers with no tunebooks

There are books by Paddy O Donoghue, Junior Crehan, Chris Langan, Brendan Tonra, John Brady, Sean Ryan (two books in fact), Charlie Lennon etc etc.

In fairness though I find quite a few books could have done with a bit of weeding, some more than others, not every tune warrants publication and some would have been best forgotten.

It would be nice though to see Darech de Brun's cycle of tunes around the Beehive (sorry, kept bees for years until the son turned anaphylactic so have the extra bit of curiosity)

Re: Composers with no tunebooks

Thanks kilfarboy. I wasn't aware of publications by Junior Crehan or John Brady, though would have figured they published some.

Re: Composers with no tunebooks

How about Billy McComiskey, Paddy O'Brien the younger or Liz Carroll

Re: Composers with no tunebooks

There are only the four Martin Wynne tunes floating around out there, yes? I remember hearing rumors that there might be as many as nine, but I've never heard any actual sign of the other five, and Brian Conway indicated to me that he thought the four were all of the ones Wynne wanted to share with the world.

Re: Composers with no tunebooks

I only know of 3 Wynne tunes myself. Interestingly enough, although all of the tunes are just named after Martin Wynne himself, Joe Burke and Sean McGuire recorded an LP together in the 1960s or 70s for Outlet. They called Martin Wynne's No.2 "Burying Poteen." I'd be very interested to know how it came about. Did one of these maestros have some inside information on the tune, or was it for commercial purposes...hhmm

Re: Composers with no tunebooks

There are two Joe Liddy tunebooks. One benefit of the books is to establish authorship (and correct names) for tunes already circulating.

Is Fr. Kelly another with no tunebook?

Re: Composers with no tunebooks

Where would you stop? - look here on the tune database and I'm sure there's hundreds of people who have made up tunes. But are they all musicians? I suppose 'sin ceist eile'.

Re: Composers with no tunebooks

You've a good point. Maybe I should do this one on my own. It would be hard to get a group to contribute to this one.

Thanks for those who made suggestions anyway.

Re: Composers with no tunebooks

Brendan McLinchey is in the process of getting a book done. Charlie Lennon is doing a new book of tunes too.
Martin O'Connor is doing a book also.

There isn't a book of Paddy Fahey tunes but most of his tunes are notated in the Thesis by Maria Holohan which is in UL.

Re: Composers with no tunebooks

County Armagh concertina player, Niall Vallely has yet to publish any of his tunes. Lucky will we be when this day comes...

Re: Composers with no tunebooks

From the album notes of Brian Conway's First Through the Gate:

"No. 4 was nearly lost entirely. Brian first heard Martin play it at a Philadelphia festival in 1976, but says it took him ten years to coax the older fiddle player into playing it again! In addition to these reels, Martin composed as many as ten other tunes that he felt were unworthy of publication."
