This same question was asked on the same day at http://forum.melodeon.net/index.php?topic=556.0
and there were several replies there, so I think you'll get some good ideas. Morris tunes, nursery rhymes and your national anthem might be good tunes to start with. [I'm trying to be serious here ;-)]

And if you learn to play them all on the D row you'll have a head start if you want to play the C#/D box later.

Re: D/G melodeon stater tunes?

A good easy starter tune in the key of 'G' is "When the Saints go Marching in". only uses the first three fingers, each in place and with no hand movement whatsoever. Possibly too easy.
Try this one,

also in 'G' but this time with all four fingers in place and no movement of the hand. The tune is within an octave range and you get the chance to use your little finger. Can't be bad, must get into good habits you know right from the start.
The Hullican jig also fits this criterea. Also in 'G' and withi the octave.
Happy squeezing on your D/G.
