. . . last night where I was playing fiddle. I had a different dream a while ago where an old man gave me a fiddle to learn, telling me I needed to learn to play it.
I've no real desire to play the fiddle, but now am wondering if these are messages I should pay heed to.
Depends on your star sign. Or look at your tealeaves at the bottom of your cup. Or try slaughtering a bull and study the entrails. That definitely should put you on the right track. Good luck.
I had a dream I played cello after seeing Alasdair Fraser Natalie Hass play. Never held a bow in my life though. Great music and the only time I ever dreamed about playing an instrument.
I love dream stories.. I had a dream & woke up hearing the concertina in my head, and realized I really loved the sound.. So I bought one. Well, an English (not Anglo) Wheatstone. Due to a technical problem, pins getting unhitched - it's a bit tough to play, and I still can't. But I tell you, I sure do do a lot of listening to the likes of Michael O'Raghallaigh.
My guess is the fiddle figures largely in your future, Sugarfoot J!
Dreams are interesting.... I'd suggest you rent one for two or three months and see for yourself. Then you chase your dream without going broke in the process.
I once had a dream a ate a huge marshmellow and then I couldn't find my pillow when I awoke. Sorry...most of my jokes need apologies...
I've seen and heard Stentors that have been set up professionally, and they're excellent for beginners, probably well into intermediate standard.
The important and essential thing is that they're set up properly. Straight from the factory and cobbled together by a dealer who doesn't know or care what he's doing, except that time is nothing more than money, and then you've got a problem.
I have this recurring dream where I’m beating my father to a pulp with a stuffed camel head, then start dancing madly with my mother. I wonder what it means…
My dreams that involve music are frustrating... I'm late for a gig, don't have my instrument, etc...
Kind of like the dream about being in college and realizing that I forgot to attend a class all semester.
MY best fiddle is in the shop having major repairs with the top off etc. I have had a few dreams lately about getting it back and playing it. Can't wait, anyday now!
For instance, asleep at work yesterday—again—I dreamed that the aging but still-sultry songstress, Shinyhead O'Connor, placed the tall hat of the pope on my head, planning to then trim my hair in a bowl-cut.
Startled into wakefulness, I pinned a hasty explanatory note to my horse's saddle then walked off to have my hair trimmed by a professional.
And here's the point: looking in the mirror in the hair stylist's shop, I noticed my hair was strangely askew and did indeed need a trim. Dreams are helpers.
Dreams are telling you something, about your hopes, and your fears.
I've dreamt more than once about being asked to play with a name band, but the dream always ends before we start actually playing,
I've also dreamt about my old job, and more than once have said "I don't work here anymore, it's not my problem !".
If you dream of playing the fiddle, make it come true. If you dream of flying, don't jump off a cliff, buy a ticket or a hangglider.
Mehitabel, have you always had the gift of lucid dreaming or did you learn about it and then actively develop the ability? Decades ago, I worked in sleep research but, back then, subjects like lucid dreaming were not considered respectable areas of study. I haven’t followed the research, but I know several people have claimed to have teachable methods for promoting lucid dreaming.
Bob, I've always been able to do it as far as I can remember, but when my friends have asked how to do it I've always recommended the WBTB technique (ie. go to bed tired, wake up in the middle of the night, stay awake for a bit and then go back to sleep). That's seemed to work for a few people I know. And of course, rubbing your hands together if you think you're going to wake up, haha.
I have occasional lucid dreams, and can trigger lucidity during a dream by looking at my hand, if I remember, which is the trick, of course. It helps to stare at your hand for a minute before going to sleep.
Hmm, I just stared at my hand, and I'm STILL not lucid. I'm must not be dreaming.
As a kid I had night terrors for a couple years, never knew what they were until much later.
Lucid dreaming can come as a natural side effect of zen training. You can watch dreams like watching tv or movies. A fascinating and mysterious area of human experience. I agree with Guernsey Pete's remarks, above.
Doing nature conservation, trying to stop paths being hidden by bracken, we put up signs 'Please walk beside the path'. Don't think it worked. People were just confused.
How's this for an interpretation: The old man is your subconcious telling you that you have some desire/interest/curiosity about playing the fiddle but your conciousness denies this or isn't ready to accept it. Your subconcious could be taking this further by making you ask another old man - the Old Mustard Board - if this is really what he intended?
It's just a theory and only you know the answer.
I've been told that if you look at your hands while you are dreaming they look all blurred. Can anyone confirm this? What is it with dreams and hands?

Re: I had a dream . . .
To be serious, though, why bother renting when you can buy a Stentor for about £90? Aren't they not bad beginner fiddles?

I'm a lucid dreamer, and for some reason I never choose to play instruments in my dreams. Maybe I play them too often in real life.

Sugarfoot—We ignore our dreams at our peril.

There's always that dream you have where you're playing an instrument in a session... then wake up, and find that you are.

I've thought about playing fiddle a few times... and the first time I tried playing one, the bridge fell off. Maybe that was a sign that I shouldn't?

At £90 for a starter fiddle it may worth trying.
It must be something to do with the Martin Hayes album I've been listening to.
