Aw. thats sad. I have a lovely album of her and Peter Laban.
She had such a lovely style and a great story of how she learned the concertina. May she rest in peace.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
Very, very sorry to hear that. Thanks to your efforts, Peter, she got the recognition she deserved in recent years.
She will be sadly missed by all, especially concertina players.
I'm very, very sorry to read this... I never met her unfortunately, and i had the secret plan to visit some of the great clare concertina player in the summer, Mrs Hayes among others... Tnank you for the music Mrs Hayes. RIP
It's very sad to hear this. I have to admit that every time I watched her playing with Eoin O'Neill on the Claddagh Records video, it made me smile and the hairs stand up on the back of my neck! Her style had this overwhelming effect and the simplicity and modesty behind it came across so clear.
I never got to meet her but at least her music lingers on. Condolences to her family and those close to her and thank you Peter for your great efforts in recording with Kitty and preserving her music.
I was lucky enough to see her play in Celbridge library a few weeks ago , she was a bit nervous at the start but her wonderful accompanist was patience personified with her, my little son was with me that evening and declared "the granny was lovely and her tunes were cool " ,A lovely lady R.I.P.Paddy Cronin was playing also that evening. We were all profoundly moved by such great music from two wonderful musicians.
That's really sad to hear. I really enjoy listening to "They'll Be Good Yet". I also enjoyed watching the program about how she came out of "retirement", I think it was on TG4 or something. She seemed like a very sweet lady.
Very sad news indeed... thanks to Peter for being her musical partner and helping to bring her music forward for all of us to enjoy and remember her with.
That's sad news indeed. I think I'll just put on my "they'll be good yet" recording... Beautiful playing. My thoughts are with everyone in Miltown who knew her and to whom it must be a great loss :/
Arragh well,
Very sorry for the news. I have been really enjoying the recent videos up on youtube. There's not much you can say really about this, a great loss.
God bless her. A lovely lady, and a wonderful player.
I had the privilege to enjoy a session with her in Kilkishen a couple of years ago.
Rest in peace.
Maidin de Sathairn agus me ag Fleadh Cheoil na Gaillimhe chuala me go raibh Kitty Hayes imithe uainn . Go lui an cre go headrom ar an mbean uasal seimh ceolmhar .
On Saturday Morning while attending the Galway Fleadh I heard that Kitty Hayes had left us . Like Lizzy Crotty who died on the 27th December 1960 she will be fondly remembered for that unique style of concertina playing ,.My friend Paul Groff in the US has often commented on his attraction to the inimitable style of these two great ladies of the Clare concertina. Kitty's recording with Eoin O ' Neill is an absolute "must have"
Her second album "They'll be good yet " with Peter Laban may still be available .Buy it if you can find it . It was my good fortune to have known her late husband Josie Hayes and his brother in law Paddy Killoran . I also taught Kitty's daughters in Spanish Point .
It makes me so sad to see the greatest of our musicians depart . "They are going , going , going and we cannot bid them stay"
"I liontaibh Dé go gcastar sinn"
Very sad news. Both of her CDs were part of my inspiration to start learning the concertina. Too bad we will all have to wait to hear her duets with Mrs. Crotty now.
Kitty was laid to rest with her husband Josie and son Joe outside Coore church yesterday. The church was packed with friends and neighbours, so packed I couldn't get back in after I stepped out for a few minutes to get a few things organised. Inside Dympna O Sullivan played lovely sweet music during the mass, Tim Dennehy sang and Noel Hill played Caoineadh na tri Mhuire, I played A Stor mo Chroi at the graveside, the Junior Crehan had played for Josie and Kitty herself played for Joe there and was joined by Josephine Marsh, Mick Kinsella and Brid O Donohue for Hughie Traver's jig and reel, which Kitty learned from Joe, I never saw her play them without a tear coming to her eye.
After a meal in the Armada Hotel in Spanish Point we had some more music: Jackie Daly, Claire Keville, Susie Cox, Lorraine O'Brien, Eoin O'Neil, Quentin Cooper, John Joe Tuttle, Kitty's son in law Chris, Christy McNamara and myself played for a few hours. We had to give out a bit to Jacqui McCarthy for not bringing the concertina, but that's the way, there's always one...
I like to think Kitty would have approved of the send off.
Thanks to everybody for condolences, e-mails and messages of sympathy. We have our memories and a bit of Kitty's music to hold on to.
Kitty Hayes [RIP]

That's terribly sad to hear. I'm very grateful to have had two opportunities to meet her and hear her play. What a lovely person and a fine musician.
I'm so glad you had the chance to make a handful of videos in addition to the CD, Peter.

Re: Kitty Hayes [RIP]
My wife and I had the great pleasure of some tunes with Ms. Hayes in Ennis in '04, at the invitation of Eoin O'Neill.
She was very gracious and I think we remember her wondeful sense of humor as much or more than her playing.
Condolences, peace and many thanks,
stv
