John McHugh

John McHugh

Hey, I have my first gig coming up where I'll actually have to think of something to say in between sets, so I went looking for some useful info on the tunes my my sets. First tune in my set is John McHughs jig. Anyone have any infomation on who he is/was? Nothing listed in the tunes/comments section.

Re: John McHugh

is this the opening jig from At the racket cd "mirth making heros" B-D'D' E'D' BAB GAB AGE DEG AGE DEG

If so, its the fiddler player from Foxford, Mayo, John McHugh,

Re: John McHugh

Yes, I would agree that whilst it is of course possible that it could be the John McHugh from Antrim or indeed anywhere but it is most likely that it is the John McHugh from Mayo.

Re: John McHugh

Any idea what his relation is (if any) to Jimmy McHugh, fiddler & composer also from up that way?
I've got a reel in A maj which was learned from his playing.. (must post!)

Re: John McHugh

Some of the most dynamic Irish fiddlers I've seen up close
were well practiced in the old art of bullsh*te. They got a story for every toon and the more they stretch it, the more we love it. So, if you want to make a good impression, besides playing well-----get people to like you. Now, go kiss the Blarney Stone.

Re: John McHugh

The only Jimmy McHugh I know was the late, great, Tyrone Jimmy McHugh, who lived most of his life in Glasgow.
