Which Whistle?

Which Whistle?

I'm very new to the Tin Whistle and I own three. Clarke, Feardog ( ? the spelling) and a Generation all in the key of D. I've been searching the web and there are so many whistles I don't know which is the right one. Could any of you advise me regarding poly, tin, brass, nickle plated and the mouth piece or head. Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: Which Whistle?

Lots of good whistles around, depends on your budget.
I always recommend the Overton, I love playing it.

Re: Which Whistle?

There are at least two or three threads currently active answering this question at Chiff and Fipple.

Re: Which Whistle?

I dont really like the Aluminium whistles. I am not so keen on chrome plated whistles. I like a good brass whistle. I gather sindt are good.
Susato is an interesting variation. Loud. requires a lot of air.

Re: Which Whistle?

Definitely Dixon Trad, brass or nickel.

Re: Which Whistle?

That was the other name that was on the tip of my tongue. the Brass Dixon... sweet, but I don't pick up a whistle for months at a time literally 6 months since i played a tune on one before yesterday, so I cant justify the expense at the moment. A low D is on the shopping list too. but that also has to wait....

Re: Which Whistle?

I like my Susato (www.susato.com) and my Everywhistle (www.parkswhistles.com), they both play awesome.

Re: Which Whistle?

My daughter uses a Dixon black synthetic looking D whistle. It was a complete relief when I bought her this, because she was blasting daily with the others you already own. (Especially in the car, which is where she whistles most) This one is tunable, and inexpensive. Big pluses for a fiddling Mom.

I was told this then i got one and found it not to be true, they take very little air but good breath control.Takes time to get used to them but you can shove them all over the place if you do,just a pity about the tone.
Sindts the way to go or feadog/gen.Sindts are ridiculously easy to play, and quiet as d's go so maybe a good first whistle.
Mind you it takes a good while before you figure out what you want from a whistle anyway so maybe dont spend too much at first.
cheers JD

Re: Which Whistle?

and addendum to my endorsement of the Dixon, is that I was told when I bought it that is is light, and not too loud, and doesn't take tremendous amount of wind and in fact my 11 year old does well with it and doesn't seem to tire too easily.

Re: Which Whistle?

Thanks for the replies you guys/girls! I tried to check into Sindt whistles on the web but no direct sites to John Sindt poped up. How may I contact John Sindt?

Re: Which Whistle?

I owned a Sindt D, A, and Bb--all great whistles, all now enjoying life with other players (including a member here). John's a nice guy and easy to work with to get what you want.

Also in the running (with a little less chiff than the Sindts) are Michael Burke's whistles, in brass, aluminum, or composite. Nearly always plenty of stock on hand (no waiting--the wait for a Sindt can be half a year or more). See http://burkewhistles.com

Re: Which Whistle?

Also check out what's on hand at Patrick Jone's site: http://www.irishflutestore.com

Usually a wide assortment of new and previously owned whistles (as well as flutes) at reasonable prices.

Re: Which Whistle?

susato ;Loud. requires a lot of air.''

Well its relative. There are 2 types of susato, narrow and wide bore. I found the wide bore to take more airthan a standard Feadog. perhaps we are talking about the different vsn of the Susato?

Re: Which Whistle?

""Well its relative""
Yeh there is always that,No ive tried all bores of the sus and yes its definitely loud thats one of the reasons i dont play them much.I do have the odd tune on the sus c but ive never thought of them as needing loads of air though. The feadog is a bad comparison really as i struggle to get the air out if i havent played it in a while until i get used to it after a couple of mins, and it takes no air at all, great whistle though. But as you say its all relative.
cheers

Re: Which Whistle?

I like Dixon's, Sindt's, Burke's. I have others, but these are the ones I'm always reaching for. Susato's are way too loud for a small session, but OK for a noisier environment (such as a pub). Can pay between $30+ to $125 or so.

Re: Which Whistle?

I have a Susato VSB in D, and I don't think it'd be too loud for a small session. They are louder than a Generation or a Feadog, but they're no way "TOO LOUD"

# Posted on May 15th 2008 by Bothrops

Re: Which Whistle?

For a small session... depends on the instruments;-) a piper and a box player would IMO match a susato well enough. For big noisy sessions I like them.

Re: Which Whistle?

I bought a brass Feadog last summer for 4 euros, from a little grocer's shop on the north side of Achill Island, that sold wrinkly tomatoes a range out-of-date bicuits. I'm very happy with it. It's not loud, but it's in tune and has a clean tone.

Re: Which Whistle?

...wrinkly tomatoes *AND* a range of out of date biscuits.

"Excuse me, do you serve wrinkly tomatoes?"

"No, sir. I'm afraid we only serve humans."

Re: Which Whistle?

Susato are good for budget consience, but go the extra few quid and get a Micheal Burke, you will not regret it.

Re: Which Whistle?

I was wondering when someone would recommend Michael Burke. Great whistle and just right and in TUNE .

Re: Which Whistle?

Yep, I really like my Burke brass D.

Re: Which Whistle?

Been playing whistles 30+ years. Tried many whistles out there, are many more I haven't tried.

My all-time favourite high D is an old c1980 Feadog. It's voice is amazingly sweet, the scale balanced, the "action" (ability to nimbly negotiate the gamut) is unsurpassed. I use it for recording and live performance using a sound system, but it is too quiet for sessions.

For sessions I use a Burke aluminum. Plays much like a Generation but somewhat louder. Takes more air.

When I need maximum volume I use a Susato. I don't like the tone or the action but there are loud environments where the Susato is necessary.

For keys other than high D:

My all-time favourite C is an old tweaked Generation. It's a perfect whistle, probably the single best whistle I've ever played.

For lower keys such as F, G, low D etc I prefer Burkes. The Burke low D is simply in a different class from any other low D I've tried.

Re: Which Whistle?

Hello it's me again (Barry) and I just noticed that Richard mentioned a tweaked Generation and I've seen this phrase (tweaked) many time surfing the web. What exactlly is "tweaking"?

Re: Which Whistle?

Hi Barry sorry to dip in here and go off top but carrying on from where me and yer man were talking i just came across this http://www.tonyhinnigan.com/moviedl.php?group=29# and it reinforces my thoughts on the susato not that it matters but i think it is quite interesting in its own right anyway, for the craic if nothing else, its under the notes per lungfull results clip.
Barry check out Kerrywhistles.com go to the movie section and there is loads of whistles reviewed. You see them being played and the odd comment is given. As for tweaking try chiffandfipple.com they're adddicted to that over there.
Good luck
