Just wondering how many of the regular posters actually know each other or have played together in sessions?
For my part I can say I know/have met/played with Conan McD, Martin T, Granama (formerly known as Spoon), Dow, Harry B and Bridie (bb) Burke. There's probably some others who are hiding behind their names so I don't know it's them posting on the site.
So who do you know and who knows you? Might be interesting to find out there's people on this site you've played with but weren't aware of it.
I note that !@£$%^&*() describes himself as "a grumpy old sod". I've met quite a few of the species in sessions (I might even occasionally qualify as one myself), but how, in the absence of further specific information, can I identify any of them with the esteemed poster of this discussion?
The "Kevin Bacon Test" reminds me of when I was a trainee working for a heavy chemicals company. The company internal phone system had several thousand numbers but the printed directory did not include a name index; it was arranged only by department and section, and by office-lab-workshop etc within the section. The only names listed were those of departmental heads. The strategy we trainees worked out to locate someone whose department and number we didn't know was to phone a number in the directory at random. It never took more than 3 such calls to find someone who could point us directly to the person we wanted. Obviously, it was not a good idea to phone a departmental head!
Isn't this just name-dropping under another guise!
Not sure if I should admit that I played in a session with Dow - not even sure if he'll admit it. Seriously I suppose I have had some contact with at least half of the Aussie posters on this site. I guess we are a somewhat smaller community and I know all the West Australians here or at least I think I do.
I know the sliver spear and saint .Tootey has had lessons from Harry B but I am sure I have played in sessions with others here on this site . But what are there real or should that be reel names ?
Do we need a secret sign ?
Only if you don't bite, or phagocytose my leg off. I'll bring along a supply of fresh raw babies to throw through the bars of your cage, as a token of my cordiality.
The convention should be in Saudi Arabia, as our moral protection and security will be well catered for there, and the climate is something like what our Australian and southern USA friends seem to be getting used to these days. But vegetarian sheep's eyes may not be readily available.
I've met some of the Aussies but I'll not name any. In some
cases 'meeting' is stretching it a bit - like playing with someone
in a big session - you might never exchange a word.
... and who have you all met without realizing it? Like maybe
some of you have met 'tradpiper' or 'jig' ... ?
A convention sounds like fun. Just a point, though - to relate it to another thread about why we all come here: The difference between this site and "real life" is that I don't think I'd trust anyone I met in real life who wasn't prepared to use their real name.
If I'm feeling wacky, and jealous of flautists, it's Ian Anderson.
If I'm down in the dumps, it's Ian Curtis.
If I'm 'partying like a rock star' it's Ian Astbury.
If I'm in secret agent mode, it's Ian Fleming.
Eh, it all depends, day of the week, phase of the moon, etc.
And I forgot
Ottery
Geoff Pollitt
Johnny G (lissaniska)
John Gillard
Helen Roche
Biggus Dave
how could I forget any of them?
makes me feel like a teenager, spouting off the names of all these people I know.........
''And you're meant to guard your personal details on the internet...''
Absolutely, commendable and wise. Just posting here I have had the misfortune to meet[in a way] a few unpleasant vindictive, small minded people. and this is a site about trad! think of the social networking sites.! I never use my real name thanks mark. Its nothing personal. A campaign of aggression bullying and intimidation is a pretty easy thing to undertake even without real names etc. think how bad it could get were these people to actually have accurate information.
Now Im not saying these 'bullys' for want of a better word would actually carry there aggression to such an extreme. But I study self protection. If you want a fuller picture consult the works of . Gavin De Becker. Required reading for the 21st C.
I’m aware of only one member with whom I’m acquainted – miguel404 - but he almost never speaks here. I know I’ve played in one or two sessions with a few others, but I don’t think we’ve actually met.
My goodness, jig. My bio says my real name and some details, and I have NEVER had any problems from real life people at sessions as a result of postings here. My take is that you are probably not a bad bloke in real life but as for your online personna.....
I think you'd find that we may have heated debates on here but when you meet people from The Session.org in real life, you tend to have a laugh at all the posturing carried out at one another on here. It's all just amateur dramatics. If it wasn't I'd be worried.
Ok Key , but you tow the party line. What have you said that is contraversial? I m not going to lecture you on scientific theory and brain structure. thats your field which I know nothing about. my field is self protection and Trad. these two subjects have been my lifes work. i already know that one of these' trolls' does carry his vendettas out to an extreme. . He will maliciously slander the work of someone he has argued with. no names. but thats life. Try reading Some of Gavins work. educate yourself on the subject and we can discuss it in a sensible manner. Oh and I am not paranoid my friend. just aware.
Oh-hoh, jig I can assure you I have been in numerous scraps on here, specifically about the music, and have not always come out on top. The whole thing about this site is that there IS no party line - as I see it, you just made that up as an attempt at a put-down. I don't know why you invent that kind of rhetoric, but that's up to you. I don't know whom you are talking about when you refer to a particular troll, but they don't worry me. Glad you don't think of yourself as paranoid, but some of your posts seem to give a different impression. I'll bear in mind the author you recommended, but have to say I'm busy enough myself at present..
The Silver Spear, indeed! - how's the nag these days? kenny I know by sight from being in the same sessions a long time ago. But otherwise the only session members or users I know for definite are lurkers, lurking like big catfish in the lurky, murky deeps. Maybe depth-charges of verbal gelignite will bring them roiling to the surface, there to be relieved of their fabled stock of tunes and wisdom - rather like giant squid or something, really.
I always err on the side of caution - I don't know who any of you are, you could be mass murderers, hardened criminals, extraterrestrials, politicians or whatever! And I could be all of these things for all you know!!
umm.. I know that I've met two folks (whom shall remain nameless to "protect the innocent") directly as a result of being here. Which, I suppose, addresss the issue presented in the other thread about "...why bother"?". I'm sure that there are more, but they've (probably wisely) not 'fessed up.
you can find lots of interviews on youtube.. Gavin De Becker.
There IS no party line; Oh really? I didnt make that up as a put down. at all. that is my genuine impression. If someone contradicts the party line, or too many of them they will likely receive insults, character assassination, twisted quotes, the works. There are a number of people here who can not tolerate diversity and challenges to their view points. For evidence just look at the scales and arps thread, the ornaments threads, the 2/2 vs 4/4 threads. the teaching methods threads. etc. If a diversity of view points is celebrated, where is the tolerance and acceptance? If some newbie comes on asking for advice on a contraversal issue, unaware of the 'party line' they are likely to be pounced on by self promoted enforcers. . You think there is another reason why the site can be so unpleasant at times? oh yeah the flame wars, but they only occur when that diversity of opinion is not accepted. Someone insults another's viewpoint, there is an exchange of 'blows' a few more vultures pounce confident that they can get a bit of 'blood' a bit of the action without having to stand alone. You think it is not obvious to an impartial observer?
It's not obvious to me, jig, ( although I'm not claiming to be a totally impartial observer ). I think it's a particular problem of your own. I mean, you make all these claims re musical experience, expertise in karate, etc, etc, I just can't imagine why you feel so threatened that you need to hide your identity or require Gavin De Becker type security to escape your enemies. Baffling really. I mean, if you take your own advice ( on the learning to play tunes thread ) re martial arts, you're already dead, no ? So who is it that needs protecting ? From what ?
I know only and exclusively those who don't know themselves.
Do I know myself?
(Yes, this is a paradox).
Honestly, if I listed those here I have met in person (and think -- at least-- I am on good terms with), then the photographs would have to be published, and next thing you know, certain esteemed members may find themsevels compromised.
With the exception of dlewicki, who is already compromised.
Oh, and Emily who is too nice and too smart to be compromised.
And Reverend, who plays banjo and therefore should never be compromised.
Here we have your projection of your own concepts onto me. I feel no fear or paranoia, I dont feel threatened, at all. Im fine with it. Of course all this unpleasantness directed at me is a bore and obviously upsets observers . me? not at all. Which is why its all so futile, though perhaps the 'abusers' recieve some sort of personal satisfaction from it.
But I make no claims as you state . I simply state a few relevant facts. I mean you 'claim' expertise in zen.
What enemies? you mean a few sad individuals here. ? come on. They only upset more sensitive souls. I think i understand where some of this stuff comes from. People assume that because I have done this and that with my life that I am egotistically attached to these material things. They perhaps assume this because they are? they cant see how someone could not be.
Years ago I was in an accident that left me in a wheelchair. fortunately it was not permanent. How could I be attached to such illusory things as some physical skill that could be gone in a flash? no. these things happen to be things that I have done. thats all. who cares? not me. not you. If it relevant. ok i will mention it. If some queries my experiance I will mention it.
''on the learning to play tunes thread ) re martial arts, you're already dead '' .
I came face to face with death many years ago. I argued and fought but it was futile .I said my goodbyes to my children , in my head. I committed myself to gods hands. somehow I survived. Here i am. Take me as i am , Not as you imagine me to be.
Jig, you're accusing everyone on this site of taking a party line, and putting yourself forward as an example of being victimised, in an attempt to discredit everyone who has disagreed with you in the many threads that you cite above.
There's another way of looking at it ...
"Trolling is a game about identity deception, albeit one that is played without the consent of most of the players. The troll attempts to pass as a legitimate participant, sharing the group's common interests and concerns; the newsgroups members, if they are cognizant of trolls and other identity deceptions, attempt to both distinguish real from trolling postings, and upon judging a poster a troll, make the offending poster leave the group. Their success at the former depends on how well they — and the troll — understand identity cues; their success at the latter depends on whether the troll's enjoyment is sufficiently diminished or outweighed by the costs imposed by the group.
Trolls can be costly in several ways. A troll can disrupt the discussion on a newsgroup, disseminate bad advice, and damage the feeling of trust in the newsgroup community. Furthermore, in a group that has become sensitized to trolling — where the rate of deception is high — many honestly naïve questions may be quickly rejected as trollings. This can be quite off-putting to the new user who upon venturing a first posting is immediately bombarded with angry accusations. Even if the accusation is unfounded, being branded a troll is quite damaging to one's online reputation.
Frequently, someone who has been labelled a troll by a group may seek to redeem their reputation by discrediting their opponents, for example by claiming that other members of the group are closed-minded, conspirators, or trolls themselves."
Thats excellent information WB, all new to me.
I
However you are making an assumption there that I feel is unwarranted, but perhaps that is my poor explanation.
''Jig, you're accusing everyone on this site of taking a party line''
No I am not, that is ridiculous. how on earth could 'everyone;' hold the sand vocal same opinion?. I would say that there is an active dominant majority that has a set of beliefs that constitute a 'party line.'
The accuracy of my impression will stand alone . if it is fact the case, or not.
I have no problem with people disagreeing with me. It makes for lively debate. What bugs me is the purveyors of the partyline, propagating false and inaccurate information. that bugs me . Why? because I love Trad. I love music. I feel it deserves respect and accurate analysis and understanding.
If reels are in fact in 2/2 as the classical line goes then I am simply mistaken/ all those years I have been playing 4/4 and getting it wrong. Ok I can accept that . If it is true. By the way I had never encountered this idea before arriving here. So as soon as the statement was made I started researching . . I found many books saying 2/2 . but Then I look at Martin Hayes feet. he taps 4/4. Same as Paddy Malony. 4/4. So I feel assured that I am correct. Now I accept that 2/2 can be superimposed upon 4/4. St Annes reel comes to mind as a reel that could well be 2/2 But to resort to insults and slander because I don't 'submit' is hardly an effective way to convince someone of the strength of your position..
I suggest you re-read your postings on this thread and your earlier posts and previous history on the site, jig, and consider how closely your persona matches the above definition of trolls.... "You think it is not obvious to an impartial observer ?"
Self protection Llig. Well i grew up on the street. I grew up hitch hiking through Marroco. Traveling with a small child in Maroc realising that if it went down, as it threatened to, I would be physically unable to protect this life that I love. This baby. So I resolved to remedy the situation. Allthough we are totally at the mercy of fate, accepting this and the limitations of any human activity i resolved this issue. I studied with the best. Many years passed and those original justifications moved over and I studied because it was habit. its what I do.
My children can physically and mentally defeat a grown man. using deception distraction, and applied force. Thats why llig. because I love my children and I understand that this world is not all light and love. Sadly. We are all free to make our own paths.
My life ,and my decisions, have put me in situations where I have experienced things that I would rather not have. But they made me stronger, and wiser[ than i was, which was pretty f***ed up as a kid and teen.]
Besides llig, its fun and you meet lots of interesting people. it opens up a whole world of social possibilities. I have had my fair share of injuries but the physical conditioning I experienced has saved my life at least once. It opens up a completely different culture for appraisal. In my case Japanese culture. .It offers a complete Daoist path. A path to spiritual fulfilment.
The Japanese language has words that hold entire concepts within them that are alien to westerners. Zanshin, Mushin, Sai,
etc.
Thats some of the reasons. hope they make sense.
I suggest you re-read your postings on this thread and your earlier posts and previous history on the site, wolfbird, and consider how closely your persona matches the above definition of trolls.... "You think it is not obvious to an impartial observer ?"
see how things can get turned around WB. You think I dont review my posts etc. I do. As it happens you have joined perfectly reasonable threads with insults and aggression, not very zen eh WB. You were suspended because of it.
Look very few people to reflect on their own behaviour and realise they have been out of order. Most will deny the truth till they are blue in the face. We live in a culture if denial.
If I have been out of order I apologies.
Perhaps the social mores I grew up with are so far apart from the majority here, that it takes some time and understanding to come to terms with the difference.
I offer to all a hand of peace. All.
Take it or not you are all free. .
Bitterness revenge and hatred
sour the soul.
And the wind still blows.
IMO, you have often been out of order, but if you can remember this thread, and you can learn how to avoid sounding so patronizing and condescending, I can accept your apology as sincere, personally, and make peace, although I can't speak for anyone else.
Best of all, record your playing somewhere and then perhaps the sceptics will believe your claims to knowing so much.
And all this from a simple Q? "who Knows Who?"...I,ve slowly come to the conclusion that quite a lot of folk on the board can,t follow a simple thread to it,s entireity without stopping off to have a snipe at each other.
He said, "if I've been ....", not, "I have been ....".
However, in the interests of moving forward, I'll let that go and accept the apology also.
I've had tunes with quite a few people here. Meeting Zina was my favourite. She told me on here years ago that if she ever met me she'd thump me for my behaviour. And she did.
I hope Jig doesn't do the same, I bet his thumps hurt.
Well, that's a first, jig . no its not WB. I have apologised IF I have been out of order previously. . Its a shame that others who have earned the description of trolls as much if not more than I dont actually consider there own actions.
As far as you taking my comments, speaking my truth, as condescending, I am not responsible for your reactions.
I am still waiting for your apology WB.
Its funny actually WB. I take your post above as a prime example of being patronizing and condescending. funny how we view others remarks isnt it?
fair play llig.
How many people have you insulted on this site? got to be one of the biggest culprits eh? not that I really care.
I sometimes wonder if its all a game of one upmanship....
Most of the people I've played in sessions with are dead...all dead I tell ya.........Oh my God.....I'm all alone....My peace is made, I'll gladly leave this world so cold and dreary, and you can keep my pipes and dog and pray for ....Well me I suppose...
uh, lots. acaretta, stv_culchie, dr_funkenstein, daddae, jasonb1985, freakonthefiddle, fiddlemethis, tedium, violi, 'tinamatt, zouk8, heatherlewin, Ó hAirt... lots of people that I don't know are on here, I'm sure.
I have played with a number of great people from this site, many of whom I don't know what their nicknames are anymore (since a lot of them used to use their real names, and don't anymore). And I'm sure I've met and played with a bunch of people that I didn't know were members of this site. It seems that when I get into a session, it's all about the craic and the tunes, and I never think to ask "so are you on thesession.org?".
Within the last couple of years, I have had the pleasure of playing with a number of people that are members here, Will CPT, Georgi, Eliot, silver bow, fiddlinsue, Murph, trad2nz, and John Gillard, to name a few.
I have also become quite friendly with a number of other regulars to the forums, but have yet to meet them. So I am on board for setting up a session.orgy at a festival sometime...
But for the most part, I have had to live vicariously through Zina's travels far and wide!
Yikes, I forgot Georgi! Well, that wasn't so much playing with him as hanging on by the skin of my teeth while he and Damien Stenson rattled the rafters.
Actually Jig, you are the only person I've insulted on purpose. If I've insulted anyone by accident, then for that I apologise. The behaviour Zina was referring to was mere general comudgenly grumpiness. She is so unbelievably jolly all the time - it used to wear me down a bit. But it takes a rare person indeed to goad me into out and out insults.
People I think I'd like to have a tune with are Will, of course, and believe it or not, Bodhran Bliss.
I have never had a decent tune with any bodhran player but even though I'm deeply cynical, I am also an incorrigible optimist. And seeings as he is the best in the world, I thought I might as well cut out all the other guys and head for the top. That way, if it's successful and I enjoyed it, it would be great. But if I hated it, at least I'd be secure in the knowledge that I'd never have to try it again.
1/ I'm not certain any of you really exist... perhaps you are all just the product of some really crafty algorhythmic software.
2/ You seem to be a bunch of driven madmen/women feverishly tapping by the eerie glow of a VDT (in jig time).
3/ Self-knowledge is a highly sought-after trait enabling one to better know and understand others. I don't yet.
4/ Musicians are both solitary and social. In my musical solitude, I sense you might be there in spirit. Socially speaking, I've met none of you.
I have high hopes of some day sitting in with you, Michael. Zina's bound to help make it happen, one way or the other. Shame there's such a big puddle between our pubs....
I've met Zina, though she hadn't brought her fiddle with her and didn't play.......
If you want to play the 6 degrees of separation game, I've shook hands with the Princess Royal, and these people meet everyone, so I'm there, links across the world.......
I touched one of The Bachelors once, just outside the central pier at Blackpool. "Diane" was at number one at the time. I could have been about 12. The only reason I touched him was that I couldn't get out of his way quickly enough. It's been downhill all the way since that glorious day. And don't crowd me. No, I didn't get his bloody autograph.
For someone who isn't currently active on this board (except for the odd 4 AM posting during the wind-up thread between Will and Eliot), Zina is getting an awful lot of attention...
Oh, and Llig, she says that you had to remind her to thump you
My cousin was once a bodyguard for Dan Quayle (older viewers may remember him from such shows as "Quayle, VP" and "Mr Potatoe Head") so I believe that connects me to Frankie Gavin .... ?
I shook hands with Sarah, Duchess of York (Fergie) and explained briefly what research I was doing when she came to visit our lab - many years ago, when she was more in the limelight. She was pleasant enough, and came across as able to understand what we were up to. I've met Seb Coe (Lord Coe now), Ken Livingstone, Bruce Kent, George Gallagher and Dave Bedford. Most here won't have heard of any of them, though. Name dropping? moi?
Hey Key, I've met Seb Coe too, and got his autograph, many many years ago when he was still in short trousers... So that's a separation of 1 and is as close as I have come to any other members here as far as I know, although folks round 'ere keeps themselves to themselves and I'm in official hiding from the MFI
Kate Bush's picture made me pretty sweaty when I was a teenager, does that count for anything? Actually, come to think of it, she still has that effect on me.
Actually I once saw Telly Savalas sitting in Kensington Palace Gardens with a beautiful woman, but I left them to their own devices.
Name dropping?
Moi ?
With my reputation ?
Since I play two instruments (piano and bass) which supposedly are non-traditional, there is probably nobody on The Session who will admit to being acquainted with me or to playing music with me.
There some pictures of my plain, homely, and unhandsome self playing either piano or bass (but not both at the same time) on the web site of the Arkansas Celtic Music Society.
"In conclusion" (to quote one of the most infamous politicians from Arkansas), I have never met Bill or Hillary Clinton (even though I have lived in Arkansas for many years) and am glad that Bill is no longer President and that both of them don't live in Arkansas any longer.
I've had many strange meetings over the years. Those that stick in the memory include bumping into Christy Moore outside the Gents on a Stena Line ferry, sitting next to Kenneth Williams on a Metropolitan Line tube (and somehow resisting the temptation to say 'Here, no, stop messing about!), helping Michael Foot onto the right Northern Line train at Euston, standing in between Ian Hyslop and Harry Enfield while they held a conversation over my head (physically, not figuratively) on an upward bound escalator at Tottenham Court Road station, sharing a table with the late Jeremy Beadle in a pub in Notting Hill (of course, he wasn't dead at the time), being applauded for taking a catch on the boundary during a cricket match by Buster Bloodvessel and being abused for my fielding during another match by Keith Allen, pointing Mary Coughlan to the right exit as a Finsbury Park Fleadh wound down, and I once gave Valerie Singleton a guided tour of an exhibition and have had more than a couple of drinks with Shane MacGowan.
I thought everyone had had a couple of drinks with Shane , in the Stags Head,Camden in the eighties he was a perminant fixture. I have never seen him have one drink its like he misses that number out.
I've met so many people off the session.org that I cant possibly remember them all - so please forgive me if Ive left you off

On the positve side, I like the Florida fiddlers idea of a convention. I thoroughly enjoy some of you and actually
look for your names in the threads. Unfortunately, the real
whack jobs that I'm most curious about are from Great Brittain.

In some
cases 'meeting' is stretching it a bit - like playing with someone

some of you have met 'tradpiper' or 'jig' ... ?

A convention sounds like fun. Just a point, though - to relate it to another thread about why we all come here: The difference between this site and "real life" is that I don't think I'd trust anyone I met in real life who wasn't prepared to use their real name.

Re: Who Knows Who?
Ok Key , but you tow the party line. What have you said that is contraversial? I m not going to lecture you on scientific theory and brain structure. thats your field which I know nothing about. my field is self protection and Trad. these two subjects have been my lifes work. i already know that one of these' trolls' does carry his vendettas out to an extreme. . He will maliciously slander the work of someone he has argued with. no names. but thats life. Try reading Some of Gavins work. educate yourself on the subject and we can discuss it in a sensible manner. Oh and I am not paranoid my friend. just aware.

Re: Who Knows Who?

Re: Who Knows Who?
you can find lots of interviews on youtube..
# Posted on May 15th 2008 by jig
Re: Who Knows Who?
It's not obvious to me, jig, ( although I'm not claiming to be a totally impartial observer ). I think it's a particular problem of your own. I mean, you make all these claims re musical experience, expertise in karate, etc, etc, I just can't imagine why you feel so threatened that you need to hide your identity or require Gavin De Becker type security to escape your enemies. Baffling really. I mean, if you take your own advice ( on the learning to play tunes thread ) re martial arts, you're already dead, no ? So who is it that needs protecting ? From what ?
# Posted on May 15th 2008 by wolfbird
Re: Who Knows Who?
I know only and exclusively those who don't know themselves.
Do I know myself?
(Yes, this is a paradox).
Honestly, if I listed those here I have met in person (and think -- at least-- I am on good terms with), then the photographs would have to be published, and next thing you know, certain esteemed members may find themsevels compromised.
With the exception of dlewicki, who is already compromised.
Oh, and Emily who is too nice and too smart to be compromised.
And Reverend, who plays banjo and therefore should never be compromised.
But the others, they really better watch out.
# Posted on May 15th 2008 by Eliot
Re: Who Knows Who?
I think that the paradox is easily resolved, Eliot.
You're a mathematician. You just give yourself a negative value in the form of a minus sign, and cancel yourself out of the equation. Simple.

Re: Who Knows Who?

Re: Who Knows Who?

Re: Who Knows Who?

Re: Who Knows Who?
Zanshin, Mushin, Sai,
etc.
Thats some of the reasons. hope they make sense.

see how things can get turned around WB.

Re: Who Knows Who?
I almost shook Donny Osmond's hand when I was very little. I was too shy though.

Re: Who Knows Who?
Hey Key, I've met Seb Coe too, and got his autograph, many many years ago when he was still in short trousers... So that's a separation of 1 and is as close as I have come to any other members here as far as I know, although folks round 'ere keeps themselves to themselves and I'm in official hiding from the MFI

Re: Who Knows Who?
Kate Bush's picture made me pretty sweaty when I was a teenager, does that count for anything? Actually, come to think of it, she still has that effect on me.

Re: Who Knows Who?
Actually I once saw Telly Savalas sitting in Kensington Palace Gardens with a beautiful woman, but I left them to their own devices.

Re: Who Knows Who?

Re: Who Knows Who?

Re: Who Knows Who?
I thought everyone had had a couple of drinks with Shane , in the Stags Head,Camden in the eighties he was a perminant fixture. I have never seen him have one drink its like he misses that number out.

Re: Who Knows Who?
I don't know anybody that famous, but my neighbor, who's like
this big time homo, once claimed to have wild sex with Leonard Bernstein in some seedy Midtown Manhattan hotel.
On the positve side, I like the Florida fiddlers idea of a convention. I thoroughly enjoy some of you and actually
look for your names in the threads. Unfortunately, the real
whack jobs that I'm most curious about are from Great Brittain.
