Hi, Just wondering about tunes in Vancouver. Am going there for 3 weeks at end of June. In particular I was wondering about Gabriola island. Are there tunes as I will be there for 5 days? Nothing is listed in the sessions section. I know it's a long shot but as I am staying with relations who want to hear me play it'd be so much nicer to bring them to a session. Thanks
I live about an hour away from Vancouver and find the Irish music scene to be pretty desolate compared to other places in the world. If you find any good sessions...could you let me know about them?
There is a good session at the Irish Times pub in Victoria every Sunday evening led by Daniel Lapp.
Deise, try emailing Chris Stolz (a mandolin player in the Vancouver area) through his membership profile at http://www.thesession.org/members/display/29190 (or his email address listed in his profile).
Deise, the sessions at the Wolf and Hound on Wednesdays and Fridays are reportedly friendly and well attended. I went to a Wednesday night there once and had a great time. I think that the Monday beginners session has moved down the street to the Celtic Traditions store. If you do a search on this site for the Vancouver area, please note that the Irish Heather session no longer runs on Tuesday nights.
Tasia, if you live an hour away from Vancouver, have you checked out the newish session in south Surrey/Cloverdale? It's also listed here.
If you are OK with the short ferry ride from Vancouver, there's also our coffee house session on Bowen Island. Tends to run small, but we get the occasional influx of talented townies coming out. And we're friendly. Best to e-mail me on any given week about whether we're a go or no-go, as we generally play every other Friday.
For Gabriola Island, you might want to get in touch with Fiddler Moritz Behm (use Google for his website). I don't know him to be a session musician (despite being very talented and knowing tonnes of tunes), but he'd probably know the "scene" over there.
Hope that helps, Mike

Re: Going to Vancouver in June
Deise, I have some contacts on Gabriola (and in Vancouver!) If you email me with details of what you are looking for, I may be able to help.
