mylesm - what houlberg means is that banjo players in ITM play the melody line, so they're subjected to the same flurry of conflicting advice as the rest of us melody players. Learning by ear is best, but there are lots of ABC files on this site. Asking for tablature here is like wearing one of the Rev's t-shirts to a sartorially upscale pub ;)
But if you really, really must learn tunes from books, mylesm, learn music notation and use that instead of Tab. It mightn't look like it now, but once you get into it it's really easy to get used to for the tunes you'll want to play - all 1st position, limited number of keys, etc.
If nothing else, it'll make a huge amount of material available to you compared with the small amount of tab.
But of course, if you haven't already done so, you should listen carefully to good musicians playing the tunes since the music as written doesn't give you even half the story, as many folks here will tell you.
It's a majority of bluegrass but there is a good amount of Irish & other "Celtic" (if I may use the term) files. There are also other sites that list a fair amount of tabledit files.
But I must agree with most here that to listen really is your best bet.
To All who replied Thanks for the advise I must admit I am only starting so I find it very hard to listen and learn just by ear
To houlberg no its not a joke just a struggling beginner hoping to get started but I presume you could always play from ear so never needed any advise I find it insulting to see an answer to a genuine question being answered as is this a joke
My reply had nothing to do with being able to play by ear, just the fact that this place is loaded with ABC , dots and midi files.
Sorry, did not mean to be rude..

Re: Tab
Myles, best off, find a teacher. Learn by ear.
If you're determined to go it alone, there are some DVD tutorials and tab books here:
http://www.mally.com/results.asp?CategoryID=26
Google those same titles to find them closer to home (where home may be).
