A new found friend who plays fiddle gave me her old mandolin! Yippee!!
It's a basic A style mando. Probably chinese as I can't find a makers name on it. But it stays in tune and is fun to play. Now I can record a melody with the mando, record a harmony with my guitar and add a bodhran track. Not to mention a fiddle track when she comes over to play.
I'm stoked.
I have a good buddy been playing with for years now who wears the Dylan harmonica thing there and plinks on the mando. He switches the mando from lead to backing while I fiddle, and play the tune on the harmonica too, great fun, we make a nice little sound there. Enjoy!
Congratulations, A gift of a mandolin was what set me up for playing the tunes all those years ago. But remember fiddlers and tune players are two a penny , a guitarist who understands trad is a rare find. So keep at it.
Oh yeah, I'll never stop playing my Martin for a chinese Mandolin. But I'm glad I have something to play melody with. I think it'll help round my learning process so I know each tune inside and out.
I'm playing a lot of American trad (old time & bluegrass) these days too. The Blackest Crow, Flop-Eared Mule, Turkey in the Straw, Country Waltz and a few others.
I'm having a good time.
Well thats what matters A great instrument the mandolin. a bit too quiet for sessions larger than 2 or 3 mellow instruments. guitar picking and mando go well. mando/ guitar and harp. mando and a fiddle... just about.
I still remember that wonderful feeling when , the scale patterns were explained and I 'got it'.
Chords are great too. A friend plays jazz chords on the mando as well, to back up their songs. works really well. Turkey in the straw... some friends play that as a song I think....
My first mandolin was a gift from a friend. She got it from a teacher who had past away and left random instruments to previous students. She was not a mandolin player. I just happened to mention that I'd like to learn an instrument over the summer and it was given to me just like that.
When I finally bought my own, I passed that mandolin on to a nonprofit group that gives instruments to students who want to learn.
I have no idea where it is now, but I imagine that somewhere someone is plucking away at it.
It was a two point Ibanez.
Cool score Chris! I find the mandolin sound highly addictive I've had an octave mando for a couple of years and really enjoy playing tunes on it.
And llig, you're such a curmudgeon! You're not a vegetarian, are you? I have a vegetarian friend how is equally as irascible as you are. I'm absolutely sure his disposition would mellow dramatically if he occasionally feasted on red meat. BTW, he's also a teetotaler

Have fun with the egg-slicer.
Jez Lowe used to play and sing with a cittern and mouthorgan - it was good.

Did you not wonder why your fiddle playing friend came to the position where she could give away her mandolin?

Could it be the strings were too hard on the hairs of the bow?

Just added "Ruby with the Eyes that Sparkle" which I first heard in the movie "Cold Mountain". Great movie!

Next up? How about Bonnie Blue Flag from "Gods and Generals"? Same theme, Irish tunes hidden in American Civil War music...
