how to trasfer Windows media library to new computer

how to trasfer Windows media library to new computer

Hi, You folks have helped before on technical electronic issues and I have full faith one of you has the answer. I need to get a new computer soon. I'll probably get a laptop. Like many of you I have a large library on my Windows Media Player, most of which I've transferred from CD's. I know I could transfer them all again into the new computer but I shudder to think of the time and steps involved. Can I transfer the library over like I do to my mp3 player? Is the new computer considered a device?
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: how to trasfer Windows media library to new computer

Why don't you save your music folder as data format and drag and drop onto a blank DVD using say Roxio. So for instance if all your mp3's are stored in your default "Music" folder then save that whole folder (as long as it's not larger than your DVD storage of 4.7GB) as data project rather than music tracks this way is so much easier than doing it one by one. Then just pop the disc into your new computer and transfer. Hope this helps crfiddler.

Re: how to trasfer Windows media library to new computer

Upmine3's solution is a good one if you have a smallish collection of music.

Otherwise you can connect your two computers using an ethernet crossover cable, then enable filesharing on your old computer and you should turn up on the desktop of your new computer - you can then simply drag files you want to copy into your new computer's music folder.

Google "windows filesharing ethernet" and you'll find loads of detailed instructions.

Or connect the old hard drive to the new pc or viceversa, then just drag and drop.

Re: how to trasfer Windows media library to new computer

Rather than fiddling around with cables and connections simply find a free file-storage site, such as Sendspace, upload all your files and then download them again once you're on-line with the new computer.

Re: how to trasfer Windows media library to new computer

If most/all of your music is on your mp3 player [and you have one that works this way] you can access those tracks, as long as your mp3 player is connected, through My Computer.

Re: how to trasfer Windows media library to new computer

Just an idea, as I have been in a similar situation, though in my case I had everything to move on to a new hard drive, though the software also works selectively, it has been a help in other regards as well. I've tried at least three that claimed they'd do the job, including Norton's Ghost, and Acronis True Image was the only one that did it without bugs ~

I now also have an external drive for backup, something I recommend to anyone who has content they value on their computer...
