Concertina on eBay

Concertina on eBay

What kind of concertina is this? Suitable for ITM? Trash? Bargain? (I know nothing about this)

Re: Concertina on eBay

They sound pretty good, don't have great response or mechanics, the buttons come out in slightly different directions but never get stuck. Some of them like this have mylar valves and some have leather; the mylar ones are much better. It's ok as a beginner's instrument, but if you put any real effort into it, you'll outgrow it quickly. You'll get very little back reselling it. Ir you can spend $300 to $350, you can get a Rochelle from Concertina Connection that is also a Chinese instrument with better action and mechanics. They should have better resale and a trade in policy. Your next step up is in the $1500 range.

Re: Concertina on eBay

I don't know if I'll like it or put effort into it and I don't have much money so "They sound pretty good" and "It's ok as a beginner's instrument" is enough for me.
But is this an anglo concertina? Does it have the right number of buttons and tuning for Irish music? I wish the seller gave more information.

Re: Concertina on eBay

It looks like an anglo. It has the right number of buttons, if they're pitched correctly, to play some chromatic stuff. Most concertina tutorials for Irish tunes are focused on instruments with C/G tuning, the tuning most commonly used. Apparently this seller expect buyers to care about its color rather than how it's tuned so maybe he doesn't know how it's tuned and wouldn't know if it were badly tuned. :-D
See the "Anglo Concertina" section of the Concertina FAQ and its C/G keyboard charts.

Re: Concertina on eBay

That one is an anglo, and the same Chinese factories make 30 button English concertinas, that look look this:

The ones I've seen do come in good tune from the factory and are good enough that you can pass it on once you get your use out of it. Look up "concertina" on EBay.

Re: Concertina on eBay

Oh, and 30 button is fine for ITM, it's fully chromatic.

Re: Concertina on eBay

Stuporman, are you sure 30 button is fully chromatic? I've been told it can only play these notes: C D E F F# G A B
And can you tell me the name of those Chinese factories?
