I've just posted a few recordings of Paddy Fahey playing his own tunes on the Sound Lantern website.
Thought it would be good for people to hear him playing his own tunes and since there are no commercially available recordings this seems the best way for people to get to hear him.
Am gonna post around five tracks in total, Paddy Carty is on a couple of them.
Nice one guy with the unmentionable name, or was that the p*ss artist formally known as "F" ? I have a bunch of stuff from Paddy courtesy of another lister. It's all great. Have a stroll down the Caladh Mor for me.
I was told it was Cathal and am pretty sure it is. Remember this was done in the 1970's and the recording quality isn't great so it may not sound like Cathal speaks in person today, but having met Cathal a few times I think this is him talking.
Wow! Thanks much for posting those! I've always wondered what Mr. Fahey sounded like. I don't know what his playing background is but what beautiful tone and bowing he has. I can definitely hear his influence on the Kane Sisters.
I wonder if anyone has enough recordings to make a cd of his playing, if he would allow it?
He made quite a few archival recordings but as far as I know he's very reluctant for them to be commercially released. I think he's also reluctant for a tunebook to be published. I wrote to him once about this but never got a reply.
I was a bit reluctant to put these up myself, I've a good 30 or so tracks of Fahey playing but I don't think it'd be right to put any more on the site.
I might try him again sometime to see if I can convince him to allow his music to be more widely available.
Interesting. I can't say I blame him, in a way. He certainly has a unique way of playing & tune writing (at least I've never heard anything like it) and maybe wants to keep himself to himself, so to speak. Even if you feel you have to take them down at some point at least we got a taste!
Thanks, will listen to them as soon as I can find headphones (having to use the computers at college due to lack of one at home). Love Paddy Fahey tunes and can't wait to have a listen!!
Thanks very much for putting them up, of value to anyone interested in ITM. Nice to hear the tunes played by the man who wrote them; other renditions have given my ears insane blisters.

Re: Paddy Fahey recordings on Sound Lantern
On one track you say that is the voice of Cathal McConnell. If so he was ligging about and putting on an accent which is nothing like his own.

Re: Paddy Fahey recordings on Sound Lantern
The voice at the beginning on this one is supposed to be Cathal McConnell's ? I don't think it is though...

The details of the recording are here and this is where I got the information that it was Cathal McConnell that is speaking on the tracks

Paddy Fahey is without doubt a genius and a national treasure, not to mention a wonderful fiddle player.
