Finbar Furey, more..

Finbar Furey, more..

I was just browsing the 'recordings' section and remembered to share something.

I found a good quality vinyl rip of Finbar Furey's Prince of the Pipers LP at http://www.highqualitymp3.com/

You have to sign up to browse the forums and reach the downloads -- once you're signed in, just use the search feature for "uilleann" and there's an entire thread for pipe music (about 20-30 albums) and another for box music.

I don't believe the Furey LP was ever reprinted or currently available. The site has a healthy dose of ITM, some out of print, but some conspicuously available. For this reason, user discretion is advised. In other words, if you can still BUY IT, then don't waste someone else's work, time, and money by downloading it. :D

Re: Finbar Furey, more..

Not sure about this site. They seem to be legitimate as they are charging for album downloads, but is this fair on the artist? Can someone advise as they have a few albums I really want and they seem too cheap.

Re: Finbar Furey, more..

The forums that he's pointing to are all free downloads. They are, simply, pirated copies of the music.

I'm no fan of the RIAA, but I honestly believe an artist has the right to be paid for his work.

Now, as he said, the album in question is currently unavailable, so I can understand somebody wanting to get it, as long as they follow the original poster's advice and actually buy it then if they find it available.

Re: Finbar Furey, more..

I have the album, though haven't listened to it since my record player broke about fifteen years ago. Would it be OK for me to download it?

Re: Finbar Furey, more..

The High Quality MP3 site is just the latest in a very long list of pirates operating on the Net.

Browsing the 'Celtic' section, I was staggered to see just how many currently available albums were listed with links for free download. I was also extremely p*ssed off to discover several of my own reviews had been copied verbatim without permission (yep, I know that's a lesser crime, but the posters could at least ask beforehand). I fully intend to contact several musicians tonight to advise them of the illegality of this site.

The quandary, of course, is that certain vinyl albums (including 'Prince of the Pipers') will never see the light of day as reissued CDs with the musicians benefiting financially from the release. However, Ashkettle's advice isn't particularly helpful since Finbar Furey is never going to get any money from sales of an LP made more than thirty years ago.

Re: Finbar Furey, more..

And that's the rub with this site, and music sales in general. Finbar won't get anything for sales of a used record. He won't get anything from downloads of the MP3's. He deserves to get something for it. He created what you are enjoying so much.

I have 85 gigs of MP3's. I own the CD for every single track of that 85 gigs (yes, it's a LOT of CDs) or I got it through e-music (which is a legal service that pays the royalties). I won't be downloading this album, even though I'd like to listen to it. Perhaps it will come out re-released some day. Enough good ones are appearing on CD, or iTunes, or CDBaby, or e-Music lately legally that I'm willing to chance it.

Re: Finbar Furey, more..

I'm attempting to get the site closed down. I've discovered who owns it and found its ISP. I've asked the latter to take action (and, in this case, it does help that my own writing has been reproduced without my permission).
