Paul Brady, Welcome here kind Stranger

Paul Brady, Welcome here kind Stranger

Dunno how old this news is. Welcome Here Kind Stranger (1978) has been reissued from original master tapes recently found.

The reissued album has been available from Paul's website as a digital download for a couple of years. However, it's only just been released in CD format (though Paul's site hasn't been updated to mention this).

Time flies! I didn't think it was that long since I'd seen his website, unless I missed it there. Anyway, a long-awaited classic reissued. Good stuff.

Absolutely, DD! I'm playing the vinyl as I write - it's one of those records that offers new experiences each time you hear it.

For the record (sorry), I don't think Paul ever made a penny from the 'official' CD release which was produced from a taped copy of the vinyl. Our old nefarious chum Dave Bulmer of Celtic Music was behind this and reaped all the rewards.

It's a great collection alright, MacC. Don't have a copy myself but have heard it from time to time over the years.
How does it happen that artists don't get royalties from their own recordings? Rhetorical question maybe.
Paul Brady has not released a CD version then?

By the way, did I read somewhere that Lunasa is Leitrim's ITM musicians in residence for 2007 to 2008?
What does that entail for your part of the world?

Re: Paul Brady, Welcome here kind Stranger

No, it's probably not a rhetorical question, but it would really take too long to explain why Planxty (in their Polydor days), The Bothy Band, Brady and Irvine (and virtually everybody else who recorded for Mulligan) made absolutely zero from their recordings.

I believe that Paul has re-issued the CD himself, but his website hasn't been updated to include that information.

As for Lúnasa, the band got a nifty little Arts Council grant to play the occasional gig and teach music in Leitrim's National Schools. Bearing in mind the vast population of Leitrim, it's not surprising that the band has yet to be seen in Mohill.

Re: Paul Brady, Welcome here kind Stranger

I saw a Mulligan CD of this in Dublin quite recently. Probably a pressing from a few years ago. If was still owned by Mulligan, how is Paul able to issue his own version?

The story of Mulligan Records has been floating around for some time. Apparently, members of the Bothies were involved in founding the company but a third party eventually gained control (and got the tapes). Anyone out there brave enough to tell more of the story?

Re: Paul Brady, Welcome here kind Stranger

Amhrán,

Mulligan never issued the Paul Brady album on CD because the master tape had been lost. The copy you saw was issued by Celtic Music and was based upon a crappy copy of a tape of the album.

The full story of Mulligan and the Bothy Band will, hopefully, appear next year. Sorry, but I haven't finished writing it yet.
