I'm working on an album for a singer/songwriter here in South East Queensland, Australia. I'm trying to find an uilleann piper somewhere on the planet who would be interested in adding some of their playing to a few tracks. For various reasons the couple of good pipers I know are unavailable until later in the year. The idea would be to have a listen to the tracks and my guide melodies and then maybe record the tracks either in a proper studio or even someone's own digital setup. It would be a paid gig obviously.
One of my favourite albums at the moment is 'the Good Ear' by Dougal Adams and Ormonde Waters. The original tracks were recorded in Perth, Western Australia and then the backing guitar and bouzouki tracks were added in Sydney and London. A truly international project. And it works really well. So I'm thinking this could be a way to solve my immediate problem.
Anyone here interested?
I know two very good pipers - Brendan MacAuley & Dicky Deegan. The first lives in london and also plays flute. I think he makes pipes and flutes as well - i'm sure you could find him on the internet somehow.
The second lived in Australia for around 20 years, perhaps you've heard of him? He is a very good player also and especially likes playing his C# set of pipes. A lot of very seamus ennis type stuff. you can find him at http://www.myspace.com/dickydeegan
Howz about this for a crazy, circluar idea.... Ormonde Waters is a savage piper as well as a great concertina player, how karmic would it be to get him to do it after inspiring your thoughts of long distance recording?! seriously though, he'd be a great man for it, email me and i can hook you up. (Dougal Adams is also a great lowlands scots piper but that's another story)
Failing that, Sydney stalwart Ollie (the german fella i've known for 10 years and never actually got the last name of...) is a serious piper who'd be up for whatever you need, and Jack Brennan out of Adelaide can get round the beast, and he's a thesession regular (http://www.thesession.org/members/display/6451).
Give me an email through thesession and i'll sort you out for numbers etc.
