I'm going to be in Cork this summer for a Medical Elective, and I was wondering if anyone could give me some info on the best sessions to visit. Also, are there any courses going on there for fiddle this summer and does anyone know of any fiddle tuition that I might be able to get.
I will be there for approx. 10 weeks from 7th of July, but intend on going to Clonmel for the Fleadh Cheoil na h
Re: Courses, Tuition and Sessions in Cork this Summer
There are two session pubs I visited while there last spring. An Spailpin Fanach is Seamus Creagh's home pub: a beautiful, snug little place below street level with stone walls and a nice vibe. In addition to Seamus and Aidan Coffey (fantastic fiddle/box duet), ASF is also where the UCC students have their "student" session. The other, north of the river, is called I believe "The Corner House" or something like that; the siblings from Calico were holding down a regular session when I was there. The city center is small enough and easy enough to get around that public transport's okay--but if you have an opportunity for a day trip out of town, try to get up north to the Gaeltacht at Cuil Aodha.
I'd suggest also that you ask around at the UCC music building; they're nice folks there, Mel Mercier runs the trad-music program, and they have students coming in from around the world for exchange semesters. Nice folks.
Cork is a great city and also has the best vegetarian restaurant in Ireland.
Re: Courses, Tuition and Sessions in Cork this Summer
Hello Jamie,
In Cobh, very near to Cork there is a session every Wednesday in the Roaring Donkey Pub. Lots of polkas, slides and barndances at this session
Re: Courses, Tuition and Sessions in Cork this Summer
Don't forget Sin E, the lobby, Charlie's ( next to the lobby- they have a session on sunday afternoon) and The Cork Piper's club on Monday nites in a 2nd story pub called Aras Na Dige, on Mardyke, the lite blue building. Go have a pint at the thirsty scholar across the main gates to UCC. I WANNA GO BACK!!!!!!!! Contact me off line for more stuff
Oh and on Wednesday, they have a trad recital in teh Student Union- my daughter told me that Denis Brooks sometimes shows up and plays pipes-recital varies- singers, players....Don't know if its there during the summer months.
Re: Courses, Tuition and Sessions in Cork this Summer
In summer, the student sessions and recitals cease - pretty much everyone's gone. There are sessions almost every night of the week in the city (except Sun & Mon, I think). Tue: downstairs in The Lobby, Union Quay, with Seamus Creagh &co in the Spailpin Fanach on Sth Main St, or with the Moynihans in the Corner House, Coburg St. Wed: The Gables on Old Douglas St (behind the Exchange? Not sure of the exact address, but I can get there...), or in the Corner House (Denis Brooks plays there every week), or (probably) the Spailpin Fanach. Thu: The Gables again (99% sure) & the Spailpin (again, prob.). Fri: The Gables, or the Spailpin. Sat: the Spailpin.
There are also fairly regular gigs around the place - most often upstairs in the Lobby (cover charge varies - check www.lobby.ie ), in the Corner House (free - ask there), or in the Sky Bar & Comedy Club on Coburg Street (across the street from the Corner House. Ask in the CH. Cover charge usually €10-15). There are also trad concerts (more formal) in the Triskel Arts Centre (www.triskelartscentre.com ) and the Firkin Crane (Flook are there in July). If you're looking for info on gigs or tuition, the Living Tradition music shop on McCurtain Street is your best bet.
Enjoy! Hope the weather improves...

Re: Courses, Tuition and Sessions in Cork this Summer
For the last time... please post session information in the "sessions" section, NOT here in "discussions".
I decided to let this post stand in the hope that people would, by now, realise that the correct way to respond to these requests for session information is to add venues to the "sessions" section.
I'm tempted to simply delete these "does anybody know of sessions in ____" type of "discussions" from now on.
Re: Courses, Tuition and Sessions in Cork this Summer
jeremy could you then maybe have a sessions request system?
i mean there must be many sessions out there that arent in the sessions section and would only come out of the woodwork when such discussions are opened
Re: Courses, Tuition and Sessions in Cork this Summer
Jeremy, I'm sorry to start a session discussion and sure, publish new session in the session section, but what I was after was a subjective idea of which sessions I might preferentially go to given the circumstances I outlined, i.e. outside term time, without my own transport, having never been there before. The session section does not give the consensus of opinion I am after as to which sessions would be the best given those criterion. Neither would it be likely possible to get a decent consensus of opinion (by posting disparate questions in all the individual Cork session pages) before I leave for Cork city.
The ability to have this sort of discussion makes your site of considerable value and usefulness to me at this time. Cheers.

Cheers Deidre and everyone else!
I am particularly keen to find out about tuition if anyone has any information. Otherwise, I will try the living tradition music shop!
