Free e-Book- "The Violin", by George Hart (1909)

Came across this e-book - "The Violin: its famous makers and their Imitators", by George Hart- while searching the net for info about makers.

It's part of Project Gutenberg (c.500 pages) and gives history, dates and commentaries on individual makers, arranged alphabetically by country, with very clear wood engravings of the instruments, and the text of original makers labels.

Scroll down to Section XV for the 'Anecdotes and Miscellanea on the Violin' for some nice stuff on Dr.Johnson etc.

Superb free resource on the instrument's history. Enjoy!

I've seen this book mentioned on other histories of the violin. Thanks!

Make sure you download the html version and Save As an html file if you want the illustrations as well - no pictures in the ascii files!
Many thanks, P-K, for unearthing this one!

Fab - thanks for that!

Further to the download, if you download the zipped version, you can read the html file in the zipped version but it won't have the pictures unless you unzip the folder and then view it.

Great book and a great resource to have. Thank you!!
