Have you visited the 'Sound Lantern' yet?

We all know this is the very BEST Irish Music Forum in the World! :-D

However, I was just wondering where you guys go, if you want to post & store MP3s of your own playing?

If any of you guys are actually looking for a website to host your own MP3s, then you should check out the 'Sound Lantern' website.

It offers musicians a place to post & store some of their musical efforts, where others can come & listen & comment & rate, if they wish ..... are you brave enough to post your music there? :-D

So far, I've only posted a few MP3s of my playing over the years, on a variety of instruments, including the 'much loved' Hammered Dulcimer, but as I'm learning to make noises on the 5 String Banjo & Blues Harp too, I plan to post some of my efforts on those instruments there, as I progress. .... you have been warned!!!! ;-)

Anyway, if you are curious, here's the link to the site:

http://www.soundlantern.com/

... & here's a link to my page there:

http://www.soundlantern.com/UpdatedUser.do?UsName=Ptarmigan&UsId=310

I thought it might be a useful tool for members here who are active on the Forum, especially useful I would have thought in the heat of debate, when members here could post links to MP3s on the Sound Lantern of their own playing, to demonstrate a certain styles etc etc The possibilities are endless.

Is there a catch to it? I don't know. I can't see one, but if you know of any reason why folks shouldn't post on this site, I'd be very interested to hear them ... Ta

Or perhaps you know of other sites like this?

If so, I'd be very interested to see them, if so please post a link - Ta

Cheers
Dick

P.S. You can of course also post audio files there, so for example, you could post your 'Ode to the Bodhran'!
Or your latest song, lamenting the loss of a cherished Bodhran! :-D

Re: Have you visited the 'Sound Lantern' yet?

I've had a channel on Soundlantern since it was launched to the public.

http://www.soundlantern.com/UpdatedUser.do?UsName=cathycook&subcateId=&categoryName=&UsId=66

It's quite a new website, and I found out about it because two friends of mine are on the team involved in setting it up. I think it's a great idea, a few other people from this forum have already joined, since I first mentioned it here, and I hope there will be more.

Re: Have you visited the 'Sound Lantern' yet?

Handy site that Dick, and lovely playing (as if I expected otherwise from your good self !!!) - I wonder what the copyright issues might be with it though?

BTW do you think this ferry is actually going to get going next year? It's beginning to look like a distinct possibility as far as I can see; the Scottish Government is well disposed towards it. Personally, I'd prefer they just turned around and said to Cal-Mac - you're the state owned/susidised provider of ferry services in Scotland, just do it! - but unfortunately life doesn't appear to be that simple..

"I think the wee Mandolin should be heard a lot more of, in Irish Music circles." ~ Ptarminga

Hear! Hear!

You've been busy since the 22nd, all those tracks. I'm going to have to set some time aside. I enjoyed the few I sampled, but the start of that small pipes set reminded me of the food poisoning I had a couple of days ago... :-D

Re: Have you visited the 'Sound Lantern' yet?

It's still early days, but perhaps one day, when a decent number of members here have posted their playing on SL, it might be possible to have a list here of those members.

"Ptarminga" ~ sorry Ptarm, that was unintended. "Manga" for birds?

Re: Have you visited the 'Sound Lantern' yet?

Thanks KML, one likes to do one's best, doesn't one. ;-)

Aye Cathy, I noticed you gave it a plug on .... Apriil 1st! ..... so just in case some folks thought it was a wind up, I thought it wouldn't hurt to give it another plug. :-)

Yes Ron, I certainly hope that ferry does start running next year, or sooner, cause I'm finding it very difficult to play music, or even walk, since my fingers & toes have been crossed now for so long!
As for the copyright issue, as far as us musical traddies go, I just hope folks are careful. Anyway, I think the real benefit of a site like this is perhaps, being able to post say, a version of a tune you would like to discuss, played in a particular style perhaps, which you can then go on to discuss on the forum, here.
ABC is great of course, but it's so much more exciting to be able to just click & hear a tune being played on a REAL instrument.
I look forward to hearing you post a few Fiddle tracks there, or better still bumping into you before too long, for a wee tune.

'C' - I hope your stomach has recovered by now! Mind you, it could have been much worse .... after all, it could have been me trying to play those Pipes! ;-)
Anyway, I'm sure someone like your good self could have great fun on a site like this, loading up version after version of the same tune for discussion here, etc etc.
Hey, at least you didn't call me - 'Ptarmingin' :-D

Too Kind Ed.
Oh & quite right Ed, we must not forget 'ezfolk'. :-)

You are right of course lazyhound, this site will become much more interesting & relevent, when lots more musicians actually join up.

Dick, I'm just wondering if everyone who was christened Richard, { "like what we were" ;-) } has the kind of surname too, that just makes other kids feel they just have to poke fun at them?
Of course, when we then go & shorten our forenames to Dick, we're just asking for trouble, are we not? :-D

Cheers
Dick

Re: Have you visited the 'Sound Lantern' yet?

That's some really nice playing, there, Ptarmi! Thanks for sharing and pointing out the existence of that fine site!

I really like your two originals: The Hazel / The Claymore!!

Re: Have you visited the 'Sound Lantern' yet?

BTW, any chance you could submit the abc here? I'd love to learn them, but my learning-by-ear skills (though improving) are not yet up to the task... :(

Re: Have you visited the 'Sound Lantern' yet?

Very kind of you to say so KF.

As for those two wee 6/8s - "The Hazel / The Claymore".
They are both very simple little ditties, but of course, I'd be only too happy to post the ABCs.
I'll try & get that done for you this weekend.

Cheers
Dick

Re: Have you visited the 'Sound Lantern' yet?

Thanks, Ptarmi!

The fact that they are "simple" is part of the appeal for me ... you know, sometimes "less is more"!

I'll keep my eyes open for them! You rock! :)

Re: Have you visited the 'Sound Lantern' yet?

Thanks for the timely reminder Ed.

I've just been over & have now updated my 'ezFolk' page:
