A Living Legend!!

A Living Legend!!

I've just stumbled on this clip from Comhaltaslive at http://comhaltas.ie/music/detail/comhaltaslive_252_4_set_of_reels_with_peter_horan_flute_and_gerry_harringto/. Many of you will be more familiar with Peter Horan when he dueted with the late great Sligo fiddle player, Fred Finn. However, here he is thirty or so years later in his eighties playing some great music with Gerry Harrington. This man is truly amazing - long may he continue!

Re: A Living Legend!!

I met him (Peter Horan) a couple of times. Even got a compliment from him about my playing once :D.

Re: A Living Legend!!

Absolutely marvelous stuff.

The fella the other day that said Irish music needs a guitar to make it sound better could do with a look at this.
Or grow a pair of ears.

Re: A Living Legend!!

Agree 100%.

Peter is one of my heroes. I hope he's well and enjoying his music as much as ever.

Re: A Living Legend!!

I've played in sessions led by Peter Horan at Feakle festival, a great player, and wonderful to see someone in his 80s with so much energy and enthusiasm in his playing, really inspiring. I was really chuffed when he complimented my playing once too.

Re: A Living Legend!!

I have to echo what everyone has said here about his personality as well as his playing. I'll never forget walking into the Roisn Dubh in Gurteen some eight or nine years ago carrying my fiddle. When I seen Peter along with Ollie Ross and some other equally well known musicians I decided that this was going to be a "listening night". However, Peter called me over to join in and notwithstanding my claims that I mightn't know enough of the tunes, he wasn't going to take no for an answer. This turned out to be the best session that I've ever played at as not only did it include all the great old Sligo tunes, Peter also took down his fiddle which he plays with great gusto and to say the atmosphere was electric would have been somewhat of an understatement!

Re: A Living Legend!!

I am also privileged to have played with that wonderful gentleman - in Feakle and Charlestown. He loves the bodhran, fair play to him, and was keen for me play with him, even when, like Bannerman, I wanted to just listen!

Top man, top player.

Re: A Living Legend!!

He seemed to be wherever I was last summer - Milltown, Drumshanbo, Achill Island, Feakle - and, despite his age, he can keep going flat out into the wee small hours. He knows how to find the music in anyone's playing.
