can anyone tell me what they think are the best accordion cases available. I want something sturdy yet light enough for travelling. any advice would be appreciated!
maybe I am old fashioned, but my hard cases give me a warm and fuzzy feeling when I travel with my box.
I travel for my job and I have seen the strange things that can happen even to carry ons and in vehicles.
And in the US, with the cost of boxes going through the roof with the exchange rate, even though I will get teased when I say it, you have to treat the box for what it is...a finely crafted instrument.
I would suggest a rucksack designed specifically for accordions, which are lightweight and give good protection. I use one myself for a Jubilee 3voice Paolo Soprani and I have brought it on Ryanair flights as hand luggage. It's size did fit the recommended size for hand luggage as they have a 'measuring cage' beside the check-in desk which determines if you will be allowed to take it on board or not. It's nice to know your instrument is nearby rather than being thrown around by baggage handlers.
I thought I would never use a gig bag before I bought a Hohner bag for my PA. It's made for them by Warwick, and it seems the same Warwick bags run a bit less expensive. It has 1 inch padding everywhere, a really tough water resistant exterior and pockets everywhere. I can carry it like a case or wear it like a backpack. I had to find a place to store the hard case.

Re: accordion case
Have you thought about a gig bag? I hardly use my Castagnari hard case at all nowadays. I had got an accordion gig bag before (or maybe before I'd realised) they had brought out ones for button boxes. The accordion one affords plenty of spare room, for eg flute, flute stand and whistles, but I do wish now I'd gotten a smaller one:

Re: accordion case
But you could probably get away with a gig bag as hand luggage - even safer, don't you think?

Re: accordion case
Mike Mullen from Dublin is a very good accordion maker. he made a beautiful case for my old Hohner. 01 8479985 is his phone number.
