I'm new here... what can I find around Guildford, England?
I'm new here... what can I find around Guildford, England?
Hello everybody!!
As said in the title, I'm new here. New on this website, new in Guildford and new in England. I come from France, where I play in a Britanny music band at what we call "Fest-noz", and although I come back regularly in France, I miss the celtic music... I'd like to find concerts (sessions) to go to in order to listen to music and dance (if people dance, I dunno how it goes around there... although I dunno the english / scotish / irish dances, I'm sure they will be quite close to the britanny ones and I'll be pleased to learn them anyway)...
And of course, if some people want to make my band come to a festival, I'm sure all of us would be pleased... but that's not my priority at the moment.
Ah yeah, I forgot: I got no car so if I can find places where it's easy to go by bus or train...
Re: I'm new here... what can I find around Guildford, England?
I presume you've used the sessions list already, to try to find what's on near you ?
There was always, when I was a young man, at least one folk club at every university, and more in the towns. Ah, well, those were the days.........
But there certainly are sessions in South London, that shouldn't be too far away.
And try to get hold of a copy of Folk London, too, that will list a large number of South-of-the-river folk clubs and events.

No, Nicholas, he's not at the wrong end of the country, just a bit out of the main focus.
But, see, in Folk London;
En Bouge, London's French and Breton dance and music club, 3rd Monday of every month, 7.30 - 10.30, The London Welsh Centre, 157-163 Gray's Inn Road, London WC1X 8UE; www.gigcb.com/onbouge.php
Re: I'm new here... what can I find around Guildford, England?
Thanks a lot for the info! Yes, I had a look at the events part, and found a couple of gigs in London or around. I did not know about Folk London. Is it a newspaper?
1st of may will be a work evening, so I won't be able to go and see morris dances. There used to be a folk club here at the university, but it stopped last year of before, I think, and I did not manage to find anybody who knows about it...
I might try to go to Cornwell or Wales or scotland from time to time, so I might as well try to go there when I find nice sessions on this website.

Morris dancers in my day, every 1st may. And many of them could play music as well.

You've landed in the wrong end of the country! But good luck anyway.
