I think it's one where the banjo player habitually forgets to play the 2nd part. In an ideal world (that is, when my ear reassembles the notes) it's like the D mix version that I'm most familiar with, and sounds an awful lot like Kevin Burke's version.
How about "Clare version which is *sometimes* a single reel"? It's played around these parts normally, and has a bunch of discography that way too. Also, the guy was stuck on the first part for a very, very long time
James Kelly recorded it double, but I've never come across any other musician playing it in the same way. It's definitely a single reel, very rarely played double.
I think we're talking cross purposes here. There are 2 versions of the Dmix Toss The Feathers, the standard one which is a dead common double reel, and the much rarer Clare setting which is a single reel.
Fair enough I looked at the tune you linked to and I hear that as a double one, the second one (not sure it's specifically a Clare one to be honest, it's common among pipers) I have heard both double and single. Now, there's a third D version I got of Martin Rochford that is single and Clare.
I think the group probably learn't this Toss the Feathers from the Corrs who are the only group I've ever heard play the first part three times on their recording. This setting (personally my favourite Toss the Feathers) was played by that great West Clare fiddler Bobby Casey as a double reel along with the other minor one which is a single reel.
I knew I remembered it..Thanks Ceili
The Dubliners did that into Maid Behind The Bar and then into the original tune again..
Its a good recording of it.

Re: What verison of Toss the Feathers is this?
It's the Clare version which is a single reel. Read the comments here for more info http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/138.

Re: What verison of Toss the Feathers is this?
In this part of Clare (the West) it's generally not played single

Slainte, I've heard it widely played double, rarely as a single reel.
Lordy, they butchered it in that video clip....

I think we're talking cross purposes here. There are 2 versions of the Dmix Toss The Feathers, the standard one which is a dead common double reel, and the much rarer Clare setting which is a single reel.
The dead common double one:
X: 1
T: Toss The Feathers #2
M: 4/4
L: 1/8
R: reel
K: Dmix
D2FD ADFD|ABcA GECE|D2FD ADFA|cded cAGE|
D2FD ADFD|ABcA GECE|cABG A3B|1 cded cAGE:|2 cded cAGc||
|:Ad~d2 Ad~d2|Ad~d2 ed^cd|eaag ~a3g|eaag ed^cd|
efge afge|dfed cAAB|cABG A3B|1 cded cAGc:|2 cded cAGE||
And the single reel that's supposedly from Co. Clare:
X: 1
T: Toss The Feathers #3
M: 4/4
L: 1/8
R: reel
K: Dmix
D2AD EDAD|D2AG EAGE|D2AD EDEG| AddB cAGE:|2 AcGE EDD2||
Add^c d2cd|ed^cd ed~d2|eaag ed^cd|ed^cd ed~d2|
eaag efge|dged cAGE|D2AD EGAB|cded cAGE||
When Slainte says he's never heard it as a double, I think he means he's never heard this Clare setting as a double.

Recently heard a ceili band play Mountain Road as a double reel. There's no hard and fast rule for any tune.
