Whoa! My buddy's got a classic Gibson bass banjo from the 1920's, looks like what the clones in the back are holding. Apparently those monsters were a big deal back then, and you put bass strings on them. The bass banjo, go figger.
Actually I think it's just one guy, Brian Hefferan, with and without his glasses. Brian is an amazing uke player, he fingerpicks and frails and is a real scholar of early jazz. With his wife Lynn on the standup banjo-bass (made by Lynn's father, I believe) they are a lot of fun as the Fabulous Heftones. Brian is also, I think, the computer systems web guru for Elderly Instruments in Lansing Michigan. I took a workshop from Brian a couple years ago that was, unfortunately for me, a bit over my head. Still, it was fun, he seems like a great guy.
Not ITM but ummm....
Not ITM but ummm....

Re: Not ITM but ummm....
For the strings, I mean. Basically it's a bass, but a banjo. Well, that sounded incredibly intelligent.

Re: Not ITM but ummm....
Les Claypool ought to add one of those bass banjos to his collection. The record with it!
