Just out of curiosity, what are the most common tunes in your head?
You know, those annoying little ditties that you suddenly notice you're humming, or hear in your head when your mind slips out of focus?
Are the tunes of your current repertoire, or do you have regulars?
Anyone had a bad case of Downfall Of Paris? Or Hole in the Wall (old English country dance...)?
kid on the mountain, everytime I pick up my pipes I feel compelled to play it over and over. That or the song "Idir Árd Mhór is Éochaill" again it just plays over and over in my head, at the expense of other songs I know.
I've been trying to remember the tune of a Greek song, and am fairly stymied.
The song (roughly translated) is called "I Never Finished School", by the Rebetika baglama-player / singer Giorgios Mouflouzelis. Imagine a crack-head Greek George Formby (!) and you're quite close.
I can't find a free audio on the Net. It's chromatic or at any rate in an exotic scale and I try to hum or play it over and over and can never be sure I've actually pinned it down. Exasperating.
Even more annoying is when you can't remember a tune or tunes you've been practicing all week, especially when trying to put a set together. Example: right now, I've this notion that starting with The Connemara Stockings it would go well with Imelda Rolands, then Tim Maloneys. So I'll happily play out Connemara Sox, then...immediately nothing happens. 5 minutes later I'll remember Raymonds sister's composition, but forget the first one....grrrr....
arrrh The little cascade ......it wont go away 3 days now I have woken up tapping away to it, even the other half is getting annoyed with this foot going in the middle of the night.
When I first progressed to the blues harp from tremolos I had trouble at first finding my way round the holes. Whenever I picked up the harp in that aimless sort of way that we sometimes do I always ended up playing, inadvertently, the theme to Davy Crockett. "Davy, Davy Crockett, king of the wild frontier." Damn thing insinuated itself into my tiny brain for months.
Thanks, Grego. Stuck in my head too now. Hey, Gary stole my ax! No, wait, there it is.
I go through phases with tunes or songs I like. I'll listen to it too frequently, it gets stuck in my head, then I avoid it for a while, and later on we reconcile and I like it again.
No way around that for the songs I used to play in a band. Gigs were usually twice a week or every other week, and it was the same 30 or so songs. I'd also listen to them on the album during the week since I wanted to be sure they really were in my head, to avoid screwing them up live! The downside was not being able to get them OUT of my head for a long time afterwards.
Maybe that's why I like ITM tunes so much now. The melodies are memorable, but they don't seem to annoy me when my brain puts them on "auto play" in my head. Songs tend to annoy me after a while, on the other hand. I had "Follow Me Up To Carlow" in there for a while, too.
Once during a phase of military training, I had "Linger" by the Cranberries stuck in my head every time I was alone in the woods, for a three week period. Incredibly annoying. But at least it relaxed me, I suppose.
The "Gooseberry Bush" in G and Elvis Presley's "Wooden Heart" in D. Do you think I should consult my psychiatrist about it? Or would they make a good set?
Oh yeah, and "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy " but I can't find another tune to go with it.
Not that obnoxious, but I often take ages to remember what tune it is, which is sometimes frustrating. (Often I think it's the Kerfunten, and confuse myself)
Man goes to the doctor and complains because he can't get the tune "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Old Oak Tree " out of his head. The doctor tells him he has Tom Jones syndrome. Man: "Is that very common doc?"
Doctor: " it's not unusual".
My son is into ITM and when he lived at home, I used to wait until he had just gone to bed, then stick my head round the door and whistle a snippet of a tune.
He used to curse me as he wouldn't be able to get to sleep as the tune would be in his head.
In my case, tunes usually don't beecome obnoxious unless I am scheduled to perform them in front of an audience.
For example, I play bass with a mandolin and guitar group who occasionally and irregularly try to make fools of ourselves in public by performing in front of an audience. Also, I play piano for church services every other month which can be nerve-wracking because it is so quiet and everybody in the church can hear every note you play (including all of your mistakes).
