Tune name please (or correction of ABCs)

Tune name please (or correction of ABCs)

Me 'n' me mate have been worrying our heads over this little snippet. I'm pretty sure I've got the first part all right. I do have a second part, but I'm less sure if it's right, so here's the first part, and it'd be great if someone could identify, and help me out if my memory of the tune has gone awry. It's definitely *not* the Redhaired Lass, btw. The USP of this tune is the D to F# in the third bar:

Re: Tune name please (or correction of ABCs)

Is there a chance it could be a version of The Groves hornpipe?
(The Groves was recorded played as a slow reel by Matt Molloy.)

I know it's not this, but it reminded me of "Johnny Murray of Lochee" http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/4324

Re: Tune name please (or correction of ABCs)

We need the second part - it has elements of all the tunes mentioned above, but it's not any of them, as far as I can tell.

Re: Tune name please (or correction of ABCs)

It's a little like The Mills are Grinding and, if the Fs are played natural, it's like a version of the Bunch of Keys. But it may not be, sorry can't help any more than that.

Re: Tune name please (or correction of ABCs)

OK, Kenny. Here's how I *think* it goes, complete with second part. I have tpo say, though, the reason I didn;t post that part before is because I'm not totally sure I've got it right. It's something like, though. And I know the second part sounds a lot like the first only an octave above - that's how I think it goes:

X:1
T:Gan ainm
M:4/4
R:Reel
K:G
DGGF G2BG | ~G2BG AGFE | DFFE F2AF | ~F2Ac BGAF |
DGGF G2BG | ~G2BG AGFE | D2(3efg fdcA | AGFG AGG2 :|

dggf g2bg | ~g2bg agfe | d2(3efg fdcA | AGFG AGG2 :|

Re: Tune name please (or correction of ABCs)

FIDDLE4, I think it could well be a variant of "The First House in Connaught", not you mention it. I've still got it in the back of my head that it's maybe a distinct tune ...

Re: Tune name please (or correction of ABCs)

You're right, PaddyCmusic, it's like the Bunch of Keys and the Mills are Grinding. In fact, I reckon the Mills is so close, it's got to be it ... I think ...

Re: Tune name please (or correction of ABCs)

I think Paddy's right, it's the Flowers of Limerick (as I know it), aka the Mills are Grinding http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/5779, which is itself basically a major version of the 2-part setting of Bunch of Keys/Paddy On The Turnpike. It is similar to - but distinct from - the First House in Connaught. They're all the bloody same really.

Re: Tune name please (or correction of ABCs)

Yep, I'm fairly satisifed it is indeed the Mills. Thank you chasps - amazing site sometimes, this.

Re: Tune name please (or correction of ABCs)

Is that pronounced as spelled or does it rhyme with "wasps"?

Re: Tune name please (or correction of ABCs)

It's pronounced as spelled, Dow, and has, amongst certain people, long been a unisex substitute for 'chaps'.
