I realize I could get a shoulder strap, but it seems like it would be possible to have a two-sided guitar case where the back opened up and had space for a fiddle (maybe the body of the fiddle could fit under the neck of the guitar?)
I' m sure I've seen a two instrument case advertised on a site that sold bluegrass instruments but it was for banjo and mandolin. Try a search of catalogues like Janet Davies Music perhaps? All the best.
Most custom case makers would be able to make you such a case - But if it was to be the traditional way, the fiddle would be seated next to the neck of the guitar, making the case almost square, and thus quite large. Perhaps you won't mind that, and it should be just fine
Many musicians' magazines and such have adverts from custom case builders, though they may not nescessairily be cheap...
well I will put that on the list - along with the bandle case which I was also sure existed. SWFL - I'll keep you in mind if I ever get around to making something. I'm not too skilled a craftswoman though, so it just be some suitcases hotglued together a la martha stewart...
Thanks Ron P and Larshansen for the tips - I'd tried Janet Davies but didn't find anything, and I don't really want to pay for a custom case. There's a bunch of spray foam companies along the highway here in Oregon though - hmmm......
Just get a gig bag for your guitar (you know, the back-pack style guitar cases) and carry your fiddle. At least you could do that until you figure out all this two-in-one-case business.
There is a US company that sells very strong yet lightweight flight cases that are just shells you can put instruments inside of. The instrument can be in a case or gig bag. Whatever the instrument is in, it's supported by several foam pads placed strategicaly throughout the shell.
They used to do custom orders, and they might be able to make a shell that would house a guitar in a bag and a modest violin case. You would need to ensure both instruments have good neck and headstock support should actully fly with the thing.

Re: fitar case?
Would that be so the baggage handlers can conveniently destroy both of your instruments at once?

Re: fitar case?
nope, but that would be a neat trick. it would just be so I didn't have to set one or the other down to open doors

Re: fitar case?
Sounds like you need to hit the workshop and then sell it on the internet. I'll take one.

I recommend getting your shoulder permanently attached.
