Hello, anyone heard anything about or been to the International Eisteddfod in Llangollen? Competed there? Planning on going there this year? I may be going, if I can find a cheapish mode of transportation.
The Llangollen festival is usually worth a visit although if you are going along to hear traditional folk song and music you may be disappointed as it is heavily influenced by the classical tradition. The Celtic day is probably your best best as the rest may be too operatic. For a more traditional flavour you might also consider Bydd Eisteddfod Genedlaethol 2008 to be held in Cardiff in early August. Still influenced by international opera but you will come across a good sample of traditional music.
I competed in the 2005 International Festival at Llangollen in the Celtic solo class. I didn't win but it was quite fun competing and got a spot on a solo stage later in the day. I'd echo Welshman that it's fairly classical-heavy but of course, the more people who go there from other traditions, the more that might change things!
Definitely I feel it's more of a "mix" however than the Welsh Eisteddfod - which is fairly traditional and has very rigidly-defined classes, which always puts me in mind of those village flower shows, with their "Best arrangement of three daffodils"-type prizes. Nothing against this, but the Llangollen one is a bit more fun than that!
It depends why you are going really, if you are looking for a session they always have some kind of Welsh session going on at the Eisteddfod Genedlaethol in August. Also there you can see rock bands and other types of Welsh bands playing. I've never been to Llangollen though so can't compare. In Cardiff there is a Welsh session on a Monday night at "y Mochyn Du" (the black pig!!). http://www.thesession.org/sessions/display/478
