Musical Instruments Made in Vietnam

Musical Instruments Made in Vietnam

We're off to Vietnam next week for a few weeks holiday and I was wondering if anyone could relate to musical instruments made in that country - not necessarily "Vietnamese instruments" but western instruments like guitars, mandolins, flutes, whistles, etc.
Words of experience would be greatly appreciated. :-)

Re: Musical Instruments Made in Vietnam

I saw and played a parlour style guitar last weekend. It had
a half size body and a classical width neck. It had a very "nutty "
sound. A bit like a Blind Blake record .It was very ornately inlaid on the back etc. and looked pretty flash in a retro sort of a way. There's a guy here who imports. I'd say there would be a good few bargains over there.

Re: Musical Instruments Made in Vietnam

I bought two inlaid tailpieces from a luthier called Antoniotsai's Guitar&Mandolin Arts. It seems he is a pretty good bet, however it's difficult to know from his stuff on eBay if he's in Vietnam or Taiwan. Here's the link to his stuff :-

He does mention Ho Chi Minh City 848 Vietnam on his site.

Don't know if this helps, but he has an email address and maybe could tell you more.

Re: Musical Instruments Made in Vietnam

I just tried to find out more about Antoniotsai using Google. Most links were attached to eBay, though there was one in NSW - (possibly the guy you mentioned Steve). I read a few reviews and also found a warning on a separate site. What I read and saw suggested to me that the instruments were more inclined to be art pieces than musical instruments. :-(
But thanks to you both for your leads. :-)

Re: Musical Instruments Made in Vietnam

Me and my girlfriend bought 2 instruments from Anthony Tsai (a mandola and a double-necked mandolin/mandola), and let him ship them both over to Holland.
Both instruments came out fine and are still working :). Their good sounding instruments after some work (new bridge etc.).

Or maybe we where just lucky.

Re: Musical Instruments Made in Vietnam

Suggestions were that the timber wasn't fully seasoned and continued to dry out. Maybe your's were made from fully seasoned timbers. Hope they stay good for you - thanks for the info.
